Default I'm The One is the quintessential Van Halen song

Yeah. I know. It didn't even make it to the VH final four in April.

So what. I'm telling you, show, show your love for the best representation of Van Halen in the catalog.

This song delivers everything that makes Van Halen great.

    Brown sound guitar tone.
    Alex double bass shuffle
    Backing vocals and harmonies
    "Goofy" barbershop quartet breakdown
A smoking MA walking bass line
    "Swing" in spades
Dave with a great vocal performance and witty lyrics
Two blistering EVH solos with taps, whammy bar theatrics, wide stretch left hand licks, and pinch harmonics

Basically it's everything and anything that defines Van Halen in less than 4 minutes of sheer brillance.

C'mon linkers! Show your love for this Van Halen classic.
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

Pretty impossible to argue that one.

Too bad it never got any radio love.

Good points, but I still say "Hot for Teacher" holds that title. And "Dreams" for the Sammy Era.

A cool tune with a lot of elements that make a great song by Van Halen.

No argument. Hot for teacher perhaps a better representation of the brothers talent and what VH turned into, but I'm the One is a perfect showcase. It even describes who the band is lyrically.

No doubt they're similar tunes. I like Mike's bass playing in I'm The One better than what he does in HFT.

Can't argue with any of the OP's point's because they're all great ones!
I'm the One has all the ammunition. Blazing, yet fun. Killer musicianship and creative writing - solos/fills/harmonies/drum beats/swing triplet feel, etc.

I've always loved the song. Used to jam it quite a bit, or certain parts of it! LOL.
One of the best on an album full of gonzo material!!!
"There's too many people on this basketball that's floating around the sun, who are too afraid to allow themselves to FEEL" - Edward Van Halen
"Van Halen was never about the singer..." - a very wise fan.
"Embrace the past. Live in the moment but keep your eyes on the future, and keep on moving forward..." - Richie Sambora

As I called it in another thread a few ago, it's like the whole band's version of Eruption with vocals.

    The song definitely has swagger.

Its the cat's pajamas and think it would have been great song to lead off VH1
