Default Which Van Hagar Albums Are Better Or Just As Good As The Van Roth Albums?

Instead of just picking album vs. album - which Van Halen albums with Sammy just generally speaking do you think are better or just as good as some of the Van Halen albums with DLR.

I think 5150 and Balance/Humans Being is just as good as anything Van Halen did with Roth and I would rank them better than albums like 1984 and Diver Down. I know people love 1984, but for me - take away Panama and Drop Dead Legs and the rest of the album is meh.

If OU812 had killer production, I would praise that album as well, but it really suffers from poor production.

I am not a huge fan of FUCK, beyond Poundcake, so that's the weakest for me and I wouldn't say that it ranks among the best of Van Halen.

So which Van Halen albums with Sammy Hagar are worthy of being mentioned in the same breath as the supposed untouchable 6 from the Roth era?

Per the other thread, I would rank 5150 higher than Diver Down. I rank all of the other Roth albums from the 6 pack higher than all of the Hagar albums, including 5150.

Brett agrees with me. Dude knows his Van Halen.

I think the first 9 VH albums are all very consistent with the exception of DD, which IMHO was a creative low point for the band (not all their fault cause the record company forced them to do it). So VH, VHII, WACF, FW, 1984, 5150, OU812 and FUCK are all great records. DD and Balance are a step below the previously mentioned.

With Little Guitars and Secrets - DD will always be one of the best to me. Better than anything on ADKOT or any Hagar material... INHO

I can't take anymore rankings or album vs album threads.

I think I'll go masturbate with a cheese grater instead.

I don't think any of the Hagar albums are better than the Roth era.

I would put Humans Being itself ahead of some of the Roth stuff. I think an album of Humans Being, 5150, Summer Nights, BOBW, Aftershock, TDIO, Amsterdam, Mine All Mine, Runaround, Good Enough, and Top of the World might be better than Diver Down. But that album doesn't exist.

DD mentioned it in another thread. The problem, for me anyway, isn't Sam. It's the way that Ed writes when Dave is in the band. I just like the music better that Ed produces when he's around Dave. Sam seems to bring out the "poppier" side of Ed, and while it's still good, it just doesn't punch me in the gut like the stuff he writes with Dave.
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

It's a ML love fest up in here lately. Due his credit, he has only been an ass 70% of time instead of his normal 102%. Still think the Boss is gonna pull his plug tho.

"Better" or "just as good as" are such personal/subjective things. We all know this...

MY preference is to simply enjoy the entire VH catalog, to varying degrees, depending on my mood.
Having said that - there are days when I listen to Roth, days when I listen to Sam, the odd day for Gary, and the vast majority of days where I mix up the two main eras.

For me, it really is that simple. No "debate", no "vs", no conflict. It's music. Good music...
