Default Peavey Wolfgang - Upgrading Floyd arm

I bought this 2001 Peavey Wolfgang on Reverb last week. It arrived with a fantastic setup but I noticed the Floyd arm wasn't original. I've had a few other Wolfgangs/HPs over the years and I could tell that the thread pattern on the arm wasn't matching just right. I never really liked the threaded arm/adjustable nut design on the Ping units to begin with, so rather than tracking down a factory replacement I decided to just replace the entire thing with an original Floyd Rose style arm with the knurled adjustment knob on top: no wrench required to adjust the tension on the arm.

I ordered the arm from Stewmac (item# 1269). It's actually a Schaller brand arm/bushing, so I'm sure you can get these from Allparts, etc. & save some cash on shipping.

Here's the Wolfgang; 2001 model in dark cherry burst.

The nut on the bottom that holds in the threaded insert. It's a pain to grab hold of. I couldn't get a good grip with any of my pliers and the cavity isn't routed wide enough to get any type of socket on the nut. I opted to remove the bridge to get access to it.

Anytime you remove the trem springs, the bridge is going to fall straight out so always place a cloth under it.

    Easy as pie.

    The nut is 12mm:

There's quite a mess of washers & plastic spacers on this thing. No idea what the function is.

Here's the label on the Schaller reaplacement arm. It's StewMac item# 1269.

It's also a lot less complicated. The arm with the knurled nut, the black bushing, a collar or sleeve that slides over the bottm part of the bushing, and a 3mm hex bolt with washer. There was an extra hex nut in the package that was a little longer. Not sure when it's supposed to be used:[/B]

The Schaller bushing was an almost perfect fit. It was just a little snug, so I wrapped some fine grade sandpaper around a screwdriver to clean out any burrs in the bridge plate hole.

I put a drop of oil around the bushing. I laid the bridge flat on my workbench and placed a small block of wood on top of the bushing before giving it a few solid hits with a hammer:

Slide the sleeve over the bottom of the bushing from the other end of the plate, then snug up the 3mm bolt.

Now's a good time to put some type of lube on the bridge's knife edges. I use a little Chapstick applied with a toothpick (an old Dan Erlewine tip):

The bridge posts get a dab as well:

This is after I put the bridge back on & reinstalled the springs:

At this point, the assistant was getting anxious & wanting to help:

The Schaller arm drops right in and you tighten the knurled nut to adjust how loose or tight you want the arm to be.

I wish I would've put these on all my other Peavey Wolfgangs/HPs.

    All done!!

Great job! I did the same with my Wolfgang when I got it back in 2000. I never liked that tremolo arm fitting either.

Very detailed and thorough posts, with very cool close up photographs.
    Great job.

Have to agree with your choice, as I've never been a real fan of those threaded arms either.

Yeah, it's got a lot of those "imperfections" in the wood.

great thread for sure.... good pics too.

I personally hate those screw in, threaded bars and I much prefer the old school nut collar as I feel the bar sits lower and also you can adjust it to have "play" like Ed's did so you can create the "Intruder" chain effect when you spin the bar and get the feedback from the clunking plus I like the look better. I actually switch out all floyd bars I have to have the old school collars. However that being said I can see why a player would want one of these too as its a tighter package and fits the bill better for normal playing I guess.

    again great post....

    Rob
