......correct me if i'm wrong...but Al does the cover art right ?.....the fair warning cover depicts the fighting that was going on with-in the band at the time.....1984..I think they knew they had a gem ....5150...atlas straining to hold up the heavy vh ...back cover atlas gives out and the new vh is born....& III ...& that circus guy receiving a hell of a blow.....kind of sums everything up....wouldn't you say ?.....I somtimes wonder.....is it buisness.....you know what i mean ?

Dave was the one along with Pete Angelus who was in charge of the cover art with Fair Warning and 1984. I don't know when Al took over.

I actually liked the FUCK album artwork a lot. It is simple, but classic. VHII is a good one too. I'm a fan of "less is better" when it comes to album artwork.

The III artwork is less than impressive. Someone could have photoshopped that one in about 5 minutes. And I didn't really get the circus flavor there... it didn't really mesh with the music at all. Maybe their private lives were a circus, but not the music...

    Just my opinion!

I could have sworn that it was Alex who chose the FW album cover after seeing the original artwork.

I'm not sure who's responsible for the actual art, but but the Fair Waring cover is derived from an impressionist painting entitled "Sunday Afternoon in the Park". Look it up, kids.
As for 3, I always perceived the cover as a metaphor for what VH was doing to their fanbase. If you notice, the canon says VH right on it, and the guy taking it in the gut is us, collectively speaking.

Alex did chose the cover art for Fair Warning, somewhere on the Internet you can find the whole painting. They only used part of it. Way back when, it was featured on the cover of some famous mag (life, Time, something...)and it accompanied and article about the human brain.I wish I could remember the name of the painter, sorry and I have to search through my collection to figure it out.

The cover of Fair Warning was a portion of a painting by William Kurelek entitled "The Maze", and yes, Al picked it out. he originally planned to use only the part with a man ramming his head into a brick wall, but decided to use more of it.

Apart from that, I know Al came up with the original VH logo on a bar napkin, but I'm not sure how involved he was in the artwork for each of the albums.

Really? I've always been curious to know who came up with the original logo. Where did you hear that? I'd still love to know who did the original logo illustration on the first Van Halen cover. I don't believe there's any creative credit on that album.

The "Fair Warning" cover art was featured in "The Elephant man" released in 1980 before the album even came out. It was in a frame featured on a wall in the london hospital.

I'm not sure where I first heard that, ddl - I think it may have been mentioned in Dave's book, but I can't remember for sure. if it comes to me, I'll let you know.

Yeah, and I think it is still housed there if I'm not mistaken.

Cool! I love to hear all the little bits of trivia behind cover art. Another interesting tidbit was how the band was searching for sponsorship for the 1984 tour but none of the big corporate companies wanted to associate with them, so What did VH do? they decided to sponsor the Western Exterminator company in L.A. which is where they got that cool little guy with the hammer, top hat and sunglasses. He fit in perfectly with 1984 motif. I always thought that little guy could have come right out of a Warner Bros cartoon, which would have been more fitting seeing as how the band was with Warner Brothers at the time.
