Default tuning guitar to E with no reference note?

any of you ever heard of someone that could tune their guitar to E-A-D-G-B-E with no reference E (or any reference note) to start with? some guy is telling me he dated a girl who could do this.

on paper I'm guessing that someone with 'perfect pitch' could be able to do this but I've never heard of anyone that could tune a guitar exactly to a specific tuning with no initial reference note

obviously getting a guitar in tune with 'itself' is easy

Yep. My friend can do it. It's annoying. Haha.

I think I could get pretty close. I've heard you can get a reference note without a tuner from your telephone. I've never tried it, but somebody once told me that a dial tone is A 440.

my brother is grade 8 on piano and head of music in the school he teaches at, and he can't either

every guitarist knows how bad it sounds if one string goes just a fraction of a semitone out. to know an exact E note from memory would need some super precision, that's why I'm a bit sceptical on this. (not 100% doubting, I'd just like to see it done)

I hear notes in my head, but they are usually the wrong ones.

No way I could do it.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

I can tune an a string to the a flat at the beginning of I'm the One in like ten to fifteen seconds; then I tune the rest of my guitar from that. It's relative pitch - which is more common and attainable then perfect pitch. If you know your stuff (basic major, minor & perfect intervals) and can memorize some tunes in your head - relative pitch is easy to achieve.

if you know what A flat sounds like with no reference note then doesn't that mean you basically have perfect pitch? cause you can work out what every other note is from that one A flat.

what bugs me is, the level of accuracy needed to know a precise musical note like E from memory is so high I don't understand how anyone can do it. it's like being able to stick your hand in a beaker of water that's being heated, and be able to tell exactly when it hits say, 57 degrees C. (as opposed to 56.5 or 57.5)
