"He has a swaggering retro machismo that will give hives to the Steinem cabal" -Camille Paglia on Donald Trump

"Make way for the bad guy"- Tony Montana

'This hamburger don't need no helper"- David Lee Roth

"I wish Bon Jovi would've given me a call before he recorded all of his hits, because the lyrics would've been smarter, the melodies would've been much more smashing, and they would've sold a lot fewer records." -David Lee Roth

"My beef is people thinking Bon Jovi is good cuz they sold lots of records to housewives." -tango

"But being number one doesnt really mean jack fuck all. We sold twice as many records as other records that year (1984) that landed in the Number One position." ~Eddie Van Halen

That's a pretty cool read, really sounds like they had a lot of chemistry working on this stuff.
I sometimes wonder if they got the break they wanted after Fair Warning, would that have cooled them enough for maybe another 10 years
That much time partying and working together they probably needed some separation to balance it out

Ed admits to reading music because he couldn't remember the chord changes to Big Bad Bill.

Diver Down rules in my book. Here's Ed talking Diver Down from tour 7/30/1982 --- and telling the critics to fuck off about the covers. "They're not like the originals. It takes almost as much time for VH to make a cover tune sound original."

They recorded "Big Trouble" and "House of Pain"

Be nice if they could find 12 days in their busy schedules to go into the studio and make another album.

These days, it would take that long for Ed to get a simple overdub tone laid down on tape...

Kind of a 180 from their old mentality of "You can lose the spirit & vibe by overthinking things in the studio..."
"There's too many people on this basketball that's floating around the sun, who are too afraid to allow themselves to FEEL" - Edward Van Halen
"Van Halen was never about the singer..." - a very wise fan.
"Embrace the past. Live in the moment but keep your eyes on the future, and keep on moving forward..." - Richie Sambora

Used to love playing WHATGTG with my old band. It's a fun rendition that VH did!

Very cool that Jan made an appearance on Big Bad Bill. Cathedral still gives me chills - simply a gorgeous piece of music.
The Full Bug is down and dirty. Love the bluesy vibe there. Hang 'Em High is full of energy and some cool twists and turns. That opening riff is still a bitch to play, for many of us!

Secrets is a fun tune, and I love Ed's solo on there. Little Guitars (with amazing intro) was also very cool. It was neat to read Eddie explain how he fooled people into thinking he was a flamenco master, doing the intro trem picking w/melody notes simultaneously! Haha.

My least favorite VH cd in the catalog, yet obviously there's still a lot of magic on there!

Diver Down is a Van Halen party mix tape. It's made for the summer time. Not great art, but it's fun.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

DD is a fun album with some excellent original tunes. All of the cover songs make it my least favorite record from the Dave era.

They did such a good job with those covers though.

I like Diver Down, but I rarely listen to it. When I do, I skip through most of it. When you consider its placement between Fair Warning and 1984, it just seems so out of place in Van Halen's discography.

Favorite covers: Where Have All the Good Times Gone and Big Bad Bill

Favorite originals: Hang 'em High, Cathedral, and The Full Bug

The Full Bug sounds like they were trying to sound like ZZ Top.

Ouch. Poor Diver. Always the underdog Dave Halen.

The four originals on DD are comparable and even have the same brown sound as WACF and FW. It's the main reason why it trumps, for me, VH1, VH2, and '84. Yep, Diver is the third best Dave record in my sphere. I don't mind the covers at all. Even DITS. Diver screams leftover 70s jams.

Nasty tasty crunchy garbage can rock.

I've always liked DITS, but I've never been crazy about the rest of the cover tunes on DD. The original versions of several songs from ADKOT should have been on DD instead of those other cover songs.
