    Default The Downtown Sessions

I had a bunch of neighbors over last week for some pub and grub, as I usually do, and I had the DVD of the Downtown Sessions playing in the background. There was quite a bit of comments from mostly the ladies and it left several thoughts in my mind including:

    1. Everybody commented on how they looked like shit, and I reminded everyone that we all get older, and considering their lifestyles, I thought they looked fine.
    2. Everyone commented on Dave's singing. Maybe I'm biased. In those sessions, I actually think Dave sounds really good. Am I missing something?
    3. People said Eddie looked strung out. I kind of get this. Ed actually looks a lot better now. He was still looking a little boozy then, even though he had already quit for a few years.
    4. There were comments about Alex not being needed. I have to say, his bongo-ing was kind of low in the mix, and a little silly. This could be true.
    5. There was the inevitable question about Eddie's son, and who did he replace. These aren't huge fans...just regular shmos.

All in all, I really enjoy the acoustic stuff. Loved Panama. Loved You and Your Blues.

    Am I the only one?

Well....Since I have not seen the post I expected to see in this thread yet, allow me to fill the void:

    Piss on them!

That aside, I think those comments are a little rough. I mean do they get that these guys are as old as they are? Dave's singing...I think he actually did okay on it...a little of that high shit that he can't pull off any more, but the Ed being strung out comment....It wasn't just the booze, but he was also still coming back from the cancer they found in his throat too. He does look a lot better now, but whatever....I get it with women....They tend to be pretty ruthless particularily in groups, so if one says something, the others will usually follow. My wife has girlfriends who come over and do the same thing if I'm watching You Tubes of VH, or Queen or whoever.
Case in point, I was watching a newer video with Roger Taylor from Queen, and he looks like a grandpa now! One of the girls saw him, and was like "who's that old fart?" Then I played a video of them in their heyday in Montreal, and her tone changed completely! Lol! She was like "Oh my God!!!! That's him??? He was so fucking Hot!!!!!" It's funny as hell!
Meh.....If you enjoy it who gives a fuck? It was quite different for VH too really, and the way it was shot...The kinda stark black & white deal...Maybe not the most flattering. I think they look fine for their age in general, especially as you said considering their lifestyle over the years. I wonder what the ladies think of Tyler from Aerosmith????

    In Summary?

They do look old because they are.

Dave doesn't sing that well anymore.

Long hair on old people looks horrible 99.99% of the time.

No one should be expected to know who Wolfgang Van Halen is outside of VH and Tremonti fans.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

    Preferred pronouns: he/him/his

Hurricane Halen - Let's all gingery touch our sword tips!!!

DONATE TO THE LINKS YA CHEAP BASTARDS!!!!

I like the Downtown Sessions. Dave is fine, and as far as their aging? Damn, compare them to all the other old bands out there. Dave, Ed, and Al all look waaaay better than any of their contemporaries. Shit, Steven Tyler and Joe Perry look like a couple of old bag ladies.

I will say Alex didn't look too into it lol.

Bottom line....rock n roll is a young persons game.

Any of the old bands could release a killer record tomorrow and all the talk would be how old they look.

Was this the bonus dvd that came with ADKOT? I think I bought that version.

I need to dig that out and watch this. I don't think I ever did.

Yep. Actually one of the bright spots of the ADKOT release. The acoustic jams were pretty cool.

I bought the deluxe cd/dvd on release day, and was immediately wrapped up it. Eddie & Dave again? Hell yeah!!!
The novelty of ADKoT has worn off, so now when I talk about loving the album, it's because I do. Not simply because it's new and the VH de jour...

The Downtown Sessions dvd is a bit different. I'm immediately reminded of Ed's old remark that he wouldn't do an MTV Unplugged episode and "butcher the music with an acoustic", or something like that. He blew the doors off on the ADKoT record. He didn't do himself, the songs, or his reputation, any favors here ^^^.

He looks stiff, awkward, and almost unsure of his playing... NEVER thought (before 2004 and after) I'd say that about Eddie Van Halen...
Alex and Wolf look bored. Dave is the most comfortable and in his element. He's hamming it up and doing a good job of it! Loved the "assumption" story, too!

    But back to Edward.
He's performed MUCH better on an acoustic in the past. Dave, Sammy, and even Gary years. Not sure what happened on these clips, yet I almost wish I could un-see them
"There's too many people on this basketball that's floating around the sun, who are too afraid to allow themselves to FEEL" - Edward Van Halen
"Van Halen was never about the singer..." - a very wise fan.
"Embrace the past. Live in the moment but keep your eyes on the future, and keep on moving forward..." - Richie Sambora
