Talking A VH/KISS THEORY, AN APOLOGY, & TRIBUTE BANDS PART 2!

A VH/KISS THEORY AND AN APOLOGY
It’s rare that an apology is delivered within the Van Halen universe. However, former VH frontman Sammy Hagar broke new ground when he recently appeared on the Oprah Winfrey Network’s “Where Are They Now?” segment saying “I’m sorry” to the band for things he has said in the past.

In episode 6, part 2 of “Dave & Dave Unchained – A Van Halen podcast,” the new Hagar interview gets fully analyzed and motives are questioned. The Dave’s also continue their Van Halen tribute band series this time spotlighting singer Buddy Blanchard, who fulfills the David Lee Roth role in Romeo Delight, which is based in the Philadelphia area. Blanchard talks about how he closely studies and recreates the band’s musical and visual presentation plus he shares his thoughts on the VH catalog.

On top of all this, the podcast kicks off with a colorful discussion about one of the Dave’s recent backstage encounter with KISS bassist/vocalist Gene Simmons, which led to a conversation about Eddie and Alex Van Halen’s involvement in recording the 1977 KISS hit, “Christine Sixteen.”

Throughout the episode the Dave’s argue theories, rib each other, and debate issues that involve everything Van Halen.

That Romeo Delight Philly tribute band from this podcast is pretty interesting, and pretty damn cool! They play "Top Jimmy!"

Also do "I'll Wait," "Dancing in Street"--two other songs you never hear at a VH trib show, plus a Sammy Era medley and some Dave solo tunes.

Still haven't seen anyone do "One Foot Out the Door"...

Arrow Dave & Sammy - here we go!!!

    VH 1981 vs. 1991 THROWDOWN
It’s Rocktober folks and in celebration of David Lee Roth’s (Oct. 10) and Sammy Hagar’s (Oct. 13) birthdays, 1981’s “Fair Warning” is pitted against 1991’s “For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge” in an album battle for episode 7 of “Dave & Dave Unchained – A Van Halen podcast.” Not only are the records compared and contrasted in a full detailed analysis, but surprising similarities are also drawn between these two historic releases.

When we last left Hagar, he was issuing an apology to Van Halen via the Oprah Winfrey Network. Now he’s back in the press tossing out jabs at Roth and the band while promoting his new gig as vocal coach on “The Voice.” Hmmm…suspicious. We thought the Red Rocker was waving the white flag. Silly Sammy, digs are for kids!

Additionally, the Dave’s hash out VH’s controversial position on Rolling Stone’s 500 Greatest Albums of All Time and an interview with singer Marq Torien of the Van Halen inspired-band, BulletBoys is thrown in for good measure.

Arrow It worked the last time we got a new guy...

    VAN HALEN’S MIDLIFE CRISIS

Dial the clock back to 1998 when Van Halen decided to hire Gary Cherone of Extreme to front the band hoping the third singer is a charm. The “Van Halen III” album underperformed and wasn’t widely embraced by fans, but the tour was strong for those who caught it.

In episode 8 of “Dave & Dave Unchained – A Van Halen podcast,” the Dave’s dissect this interesting time in VH history. Not only does the dynamic duo discuss the album track-by-track, including the bootlegged bonus song (“That’s Why I Love You”) that was left off the record, they also talk about the shelved live album and the aborted sophomore effort with Cherone. Additionally, an interview with Mr. Cherone looking back on his time in the band caps it off.

Of course, current Halen news is always on the menu such as Michael Anthony’s recent interview with Eddie Trunk and his induction into the RockGodz Hall of Fame, David Lee Roth name dropping Eddie Van Halen in his blog and on his podcast, EVH’s sentimental video for Mr. Holland Opus Foundation, and a tidbit on Wolfgang Van Halen’s forthcoming solo album.

This power-packed episode is a Thanksgiving feast stuffed with VH goodness clocking in over two and a half hours – the largest “Dave & Dave Unchained” episode yet. So grab yourselves a “Dirty Water Dog” and recall the implosion of the Mighty VH!

Thumbs up Best of the Best of's!

    HALEN FOR THE HOLIDAYS

It’s the last month of the year Van Halen fans – that means it's compilation time! The Dave's analyze and agonize over Van Halen’s 1996’s “Best of Volume I” collection as well as 2004’s “The Best of Both Worlds” double-disc set. Also discussed is Sammy Hagar’s new compilation, “This is Sammy Hagar: When the Party Started, Volume 1” plus decoding the Van Hagar reunion rumors.

In order to deliver more Halen action, “The Van Halen Encyclopedia” author C.J. Chilvers joins the boys for a deep discussion on all things VH. His book is a labor of love from a truly dedicated fan. Dubbed the “Van Halen Bible,” this book delivers VH facts in an A-through-Z style making it a must-have for all die-hards.

To cap things off, legendary drummer Kenny Aronoff is interviewed about his tenure in Chickenfoot with Hagar and everybody’s favorite bearded bassist Michael Anthony.

Who knows what the New Year will bring…a tour?…an album? Stay tuned VH fans.

Another Hagar compilation and threatened with a "Volume 1" at the end.... oh boy. That dude....

Anyway did you Daves delve at all into that aborted "Best Of 1978-1984" that was supposed to come out when Dave reunited with Van Halen in 2007? Was always curious what that package would've looked like. As much as I thought there was no reason for it to exist and felt it was smart of the label to dump it.

As always, that was a fun podcast. Shit, the only podcasts I listen to.

Good to know that there are others with the kind of Best Of/Greatest Hits OCD I have. I've always said it should have been:

VAN HALEN BEST OF VOLUME I:

    1. ERUPTION
    2. YOU REALLY GOT ME
    3. RUNNIN' WITH THE DEVIL
    4. AIN'T TALKIN' 'BOUT LOVE
    5. JAMIE'S CRYIN'
    6. ICE CREAM MAN
    7. DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY
    8. BEAUTIFUL GIRLS
    9. AND THE CRADLE WILL ROCK...
    10. EVERYBODY WANTS SOME!!
    11. UNCHAINED
    12. (OH) PRETTY WOMAN
    13. JUMP
    14. PANAMA
    15. HOT FOR TEACHER
    16. I'LL WAIT
    17. ME WISE MAGIC
    18. CAN'T GET THIS STUFF NO MORE

    BEST OF VOLUME II:

    1. WHY CAN'T THIS BE LOVE
    2. DREAMS
    3. BEST OF BOTH WORLDS
    4. LOVE WALKS IN
    5. WHEN IT'S LOVE
    6. FINISH WHAT YA STARTED
    7. POUNDCAKE
    8. RUNAROUND
    9. RIGHT NOW
    10. TOP OF THE WORLD
    11. DON'T TELL ME (WHAT LOVE CAN DO)
    12. CAN'T STOP LOVIN' YOU
    13. HUMANS BEING
    14. BETWEEN US TWO

    VIDEO HITS VOLUME 1:

    1. ERUPTION
    2. YOU REALLY GOT ME
    3. RUNNIN' WITH THE DEVIL
    4. JAMIE'S CRYIN'
    5. DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY
    6. AND THE CRADLE WILL ROCK... (promo, to rep 1980)
    7. UNCHAINED
    8. (OH) PRETTY WOMAN
    9. AIN'T TALKIN' 'BOUT LOVE (live at US Festival, gotta have something from that)
    10. JUMP
    11. PANAMA
    12. HOT FOR TEACHER

    VIDEO HITS VOLUME 2:

    1. WHY CAN'T THIS BE LOVE (that pro-shot live one from Hollywood, FL)
    2. BEST OF BOTH WORLDS (from LWAN)
    3. WHEN IT'S LOVE
    4. FINISH WHAT YA STARTED
    5. POUNDCAKE
    6. RUNAROUND
    7. RIGHT NOW
    8. TOP OF THE WORLD (from LRHRN to rep that)
    9. DREAMS
    10. DON'T TELL ME (WHAT LOVE CAN DO)
    11. CAN'T STOP LOVIN' YOU
    12. HUMANS BEING

Now that's how you do a BOVI!

Or, if it had to be 1 disc, just call it:

    VAN HALEN BEST OF:

    1. ERUPTION
    2. RUNNIN' WITH THE DEVIL
    3. AIN'T TALKIN' 'BOUT LOVE
    4. DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY
    5. EVERYBODY WANTS SOME!!
    6. UNCHAINED
    7. JUMP
    8. PANAMA
    9. HOT FOR TEACHER
    10. WHY CAN'T THIS BE LOVE
    11. DREAMS
    12. BEST OF BOTH WORLDS
    13. WHEN IT'S LOVE
    14. POUNDCAKE
    15. RIGHT NOW
    16. HUMANS BEING
    17. ME WISE MAGIC
    18. CAN'T GET THIS STUFF NO MORE

    VIDEO HITS:

    1. ERUPTION
    2. RUNNIN' WITH THE DEVIL
    3. DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY
    4. UNCHAINED
    5. AIN'T TALKIN' 'BOUT LOVE
    6. JUMP
    7. PANAMA
    8. HOT FOR TEACHER
    9. WHY CAN'T THIS BE LOVE
    10. BEST OF BOTH WORLDS
    11. POUNDCAKE
    12. RIGHT NOW
    13. DREAMS
    14. HUMANS BEING

But since none of those happened, in 2004 it should have been:

VAN HALEN BEST OF VOLUME II: THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS (it is a cool title, with the same artwork):

    1. YOU REALLY GOT ME
    2. JAMIE'S CRYIN'
    3. ICE CREAM MAN
    4. BEAUTIFUL GIRLS
    5. EVERYBODY WANTS SOME!!
    6. (OH) PRETTY WOMAN
    7. HOT FOR TEACHER
    8. I'LL WAIT
    9. BEST OF BOTH WORLDS
    10. LOVE WALKS IN
    11. FINISH WHAT YA STARTED
    12. RUNAROUND
    13. TOP OF THE WORLD
    14. DON'T TELL ME (WHAT LOVE CAN DO)
    15. IT'S ABOUT TIME
    16. UP FOR BREAKFAST
    17. LEARNING TO SEE
+ WITHOUT YOU (Bonus Track, as to not fuck up the "both" theme)

VIDEO HITS VOLUME 2: THE BEST OF BOTH WORLDS:

    1. ERUPTION
    2. YOU REALLY GOT ME
    3. RUNNIN' WITH THE DEVIL
    4. JAMIE'S CRYIN'
    5. DANCE THE NIGHT AWAY
    6. AND THE CRADLE WILL ROCK...
    7. UNCHAINED
    8. (OH) PRETTY WOMAN
    9. AIN'T TALKIN' 'BOUT LOVE
    10. WHY CAN'T THIS BE LOVE
    11. BEST OF BOTH WORLDS
    12. TOP OF THE WORLD
+ WITHOUT YOU (on here instead of the DVD version of VHV1)

I like how one of the Daves was saying something similar to the above. That's what I thought TBOBW was going to be, the "Volume II" of the many huge hits they left off the first one. How the fuck do you not put HFT on the first one?! Of all songs! That's one of their Top 5 biggest hits. I understand YRGM because it's not an original, and if you're only doing 1 disc that makes sense. But ATCWR over EWS? No BOBW? CSLY over DTMWLCD? And why were all the Dave vids left off of VHVI?! What the fuck was that all about? The videos I made were assuming they weren't digging from the vaults and throwing on a live in Largo '84 video or something, by the way. Based it off stuff that already exists in the market.

And if they were going to stick with TBOBW the way they did it, they should have at least put "Volume II" at the bottom of the cover or something. I would've changed the order of the songs also, and not have had the second disc break the pattern with a few songs in a row with each singer. And I would've nixed the Sammy-singing-Dave-songs-live from LRHRN. Or at least included one Van Hagar live song. That was just weird. And how does "Dancing in the Street" beat "Ice Cream Man?" ICM is 10x more popular, I don't care what the charts say. And "Don't Tell Me" definitely should've been on there before "Black and Blue," "Not Enough," and especially "Feels So Good." And yes, "Strung Out"'s inclusion pissed me off too! Why? I have no idea, but it did.

I like how they get annoyed about the fact that every best of/greatest hits leaves off a big song. Every one just about. Look at VH and VH-related's:

BOVI: Hot for Teacher; Best of Both Worlds (the biggest rock song from the era)
TBOBW: Ice Cream Man; Don't Tell Me (What Love Can Do) (with all that space you leave these off?)

The Best: Damn Good (Everyone loves that song, WTF? And, it was a single. A lot of the songs from this were not even.)
Greatest Hits/The Deluxe Edition: Damn Good (again) and She's My Machine (Just a weird com-pi-lation to begin with. Yeah, "deluxe." Not remastered with an accompanying VHS-dubbed home video. And leaving off "Just Like Paradise" on the DVD? What?! And why no "Slam Dunk!" or "Shoo Bop" on the CD while we're at it?)

Rematch/And Rematch and More: You Make Me Crazy (his highest charting song from the Capitol era, not like it was up against a bunch of other popular songs--it's '70s Sammy!)
Unboxed: Your Love Is Driving Me Crazy (I like how in "The Inside" magazine interview he said he left if off because "rockers from the street" or something along those lines could not relate lol. But, he kept the vastly inferior "Two Sides of Love?" YLIDMC is his highest charting hit!)
The Very Best of Montrose: Make It Last ("Spaceage Sacrifice?" Fucking "We're Going Home?" The least best song on the first album is better than the best song on "Paper Money.")
The Essential Red Collection: Rock Candy, Three Lock Box, an HSAS song (I would've used "Top of the Rock").
This Is Sammy Hagar/When the Party Started Volume 1: Mas Tequila (I guess MTM, CUF, and SH&F weren't Waborita albums but not his biggest hit? And why not credit the Wabo's in the title?)

The Best of Extreme: An Accidental Collocation of Atoms?: Mutha (Don't Wanna Go to School Today) (I know, lame for an Extreme song but it was one of their bigger songs)

I know, none of this is important in the grand scheme of things in life, but whatever.

Great podcast as always, guys--but haven't ya ever sawr the end of a Super Bowl?! "Top of the World" is played virtually every year during the time right after the clock runs out in the fourth and champs are celebrating.

Also, "Dreams" was the big song played in the Persian Gulf by the Air Force, but, yeah, that was back when he was in the band which wasn't your point. Going back to the MLB/NFL/NHL/NBA thing, "Right Now" is also played a lot at sporting events.

And according to C.J. Chilvers--the VHML gave EVERYONE a meet and greet pass for the VH3 tour in '98?!?!?! Am I that much of a dingle that I didn't get one?! I was all over that VHML! And I seen those fuckers 5 times that summer lol! Must have been my "Gary Cherone Superstar" posts that caused my exclusion...

    Talking Happy New Year!

    VH RUMOR MILL OVERFLOWING

The year 2016 marked radio silence from Van Halen but the fans have never been louder. December not only brought the holidays but a bucket of rumors ranging from David Lee Roth is harmoniously recording new music with the Van Halen trio to Sammy Hagar is not out of the picture.

In episode 10 – part 1 of the Dave & Dave Unchained – A Van Halen Podcast, the Dave’s breakdown the entire list of rumors that are being floated and weigh in with their opinions on the probability of each one coming true.

Additionally, there has been a DLR sighting at a cigar shop in Studio City, CA and the gentleman who met with Dave, comedian Noel Elgrably, is interviewed about his encounter, which took place on his birthday.

This episode, marked #10, will be part 1 of a special bonus double for January. Part 2 will follow later in the month. Hopefully by then VH fans will get some clarity…if the band chooses to come out of hiding.

That's a reasonable and logical discussion of the new rumors. I've kinda had the mindset that both sides of it could be "right" in that they are getting correct information. But the info from upper management types could just be "proposals" that the band could just be considering.

Fun podcast once again. One question about it is where did they hear that VH has scarce demos from '79-'84? I never heard that before.

Granted, I never thought they had 30-40 tunes lying around but I'm sure an album could be filled up with non-WB demo songs. Look at all the 1984 leftovers from that document (sans "Ripley" now). Throw in a possible re-worked "Angel Eyes" from VHII sessions, "Act Like It Hurts (or whatever it's called pending Jeff Hausman)" with words, "Big Trouble," the "In a Midnight Hour" cover. I doubt DD had a lot of leftovers but I'm sure FW did!

I would assume they have one CD full of Dave Era leftovers not from pre-VH and one from the Sammy Era and, shit, maybe a whole CD from the Gary Era! Now that's actually almost a guarantee!
