Interesting point about Gene Simmons. "What other box set made national news?" Somehow Gene found a way to get everyone talking about a box set. Kinda nice that VH gets to be a part of that at least. If VH won't make any effort, at least they get a benefit from someone else's efforts.

DLR GETS “CRAZY” & GOLDSMITH SHOOTS VH

Episode #23 – Happy Thanksgiving folks! This month we give you a large helping of Van Halen goodies to chew on. After enjoying appetizers of VH News and a hefty mailbag, dig into the 20th anniversary celebration of David Lee Roth’s autobiography, “Crazy from the Heat” for the entrée. But save room because an exclusive interview with rock photographer Lynn Goldsmith, who shot VH back in the day, is for dessert. Strap in because this one is a wild journey.

Got somewhat caught up on these over the weekend. Up to Femme Halen. Fun listen and entertaining as always.

The Billy Sheehan one...wow, it's so weird to hear him reiterate the job offers--plural! And he said only one pro-shot EEAS video?! What the fuck's wrong with these people?! First Van Halen, then their derivatives?!

Loved the Kurt Jefferis one, so cool to hear him talk about it. I think hanging out with Van Halen for two days, watching them perform for two days up close, joining them onstage, partying with them backstage, and getting laid in their name while having video and photographic proof of it I would say definitely trumps those autographs he regrettably forgot to get! And he was only 20, but clearly wasted on MTV--that's totally awesome!

And I'm fairly certain that I'm in love with Roseann from FH. I don't know her one bit of course, but I've always had an Apollonia Kotero affinity and she's essentially an Apollonia that can play "Unchained." If I didn't live all the way out here in Pittsburgh...

Dave and Dave--Dave already dated her, but hook another fellow Dave up!

    >dig into the 20th anniversary celebration of David Lee Roth’s autobiography, “Crazy from the Heat” for the entrée.

Celebration? :O That was more of an assassination.

Perhaps we have different ideas about what makes DLR unique.
It's his unpredictability, constant dedication to living life in a uniquely constantly evolving way seemed a bit lost on you both.

These are the very things which make Crazy From The Heat a memorable experience, unlike any book I've read.

I still pull quotes out of it's arsenal, even though I haven't put a finger on my physical copy of this book in the last 20 years.

Aside from your book review, I'd like to also state a contrary position on your take of the post 1984 DLR/VH era where I think you missed the point.

DLR was the hottest property in the mid 80s. As a creative extroverted person, it's pretty clear that he was in peak OUTPUT mode. I would even go so far to say that he likely felt that the moment of his manifest destiny had arrived.

Sadly for him and probably most of us, introverted EVH was in nesting mode.

DLR's not wanting to waste the moment, to hit while the fire was hot at this time in the band's history, is an important point which in my opinion was lost in your assessment.

DLR was a man made of that moment, those early to mid 80s, when colors were off the charts, nothing was irreverent enough... and his shtick fit. (as opposed to later when his shtick stank.)

You both disparaged his Crazy From The Heat script (loved your hilarious summary, by the way!), neglecting that fact that this was exactly the sort of proven video form which had worked so successfully with VH's 1984 videos and CFTH EP, to say nothing of the fact that he had apparently already built enough credibility to have already acquired some level of approved at some level in the hollywood film world.

Reading a draft script is missing the whole visual content for which it was intended to be presented with, and a long way from how something will be presented before being edited something down to its final form.

Strangely, you both even noted how Purple Rain was great because of 1) the music performances 2) the comedy 3) the sexy females... but that the story was so-so.

So comparing the draft CFTH script without seeing the 1, 2, 3 mentioned above is a bit ingenuous.

And although it may seem naive in the post-internet world, this "stream of consciousness" filmmaking was exactly the genre of times, as evidenced by nearly all the best Van Halen music videos... as well as The Wild Life, Fast Times at Ridgemont High films all the way through Bill and Ted's Excellent Adventure by the end of the decade, only this one would have been backed with Van Halen/DLR music.

Was it going to be Citizen Kane? Probably not... but certainly a film better suited for Van Halen fans than Purple Rain.

Remember California Girls is still widely considered the "Wizard of Oz" for MTV music video for its time.

    Anyway, no harm done.

DLR is as complex a character as the Van Halen story is epic.

I appreciate your podcast (even if a bit too long ). I would hope for a bit more critical multifaceted discussion rather than just ragging on and on without considering wider perspectives within the broader context of its time.

In short carry on: adopt adapt and improve.

    Cheers,

    mrC ('',)b
