Default Backstage w/ Van Halen in '79

This weekend in 1979, Van Halen co-headlined the 1979 CaliFFornia World Music Festival.

Here's a FUN look back at the anniversary of a legendary stadium concert in the late seventies, involving Van Halen, Aerosmith, Ted Nugent, Cheech and Chong, and many more. Van Halen arrived with no less than 300 guests(!), including their "little people" security guards, and a chimpanzee dressed like DLR.

This is a great VHND article. It includes some RARE photos - all of which were taken backstage that weekend. Dare I say that even Heisenberg probably hasn't seen one or two of these!

Saw this over on your VHND page, Jeff.

Maybe it was sponsored by Dos Equis?

We never had a "ColoRRado Jam" here. Too bad.

I used to have a bootleg CD of this same show.

The sound quality was poor, but the cover looked so cool!

I couldn't dig up an old post I wrote here years ago that went into great detail about this show which I attended so I'll just post some cliff notes off the top o' my head.....

This was my third time seeing VH, having seen them previously in late '78 at the Long Beach Arena and in '77 in a club. It was pretty cool seeing a hometown band grow from the club gig to being the best band to play the stadium that weekend. Neither day was close to sold out and it was all general admission.

With the exception of VH, this was the first time I'd seen every other act on both day's bill. Cheap Trick, REO Speedwagon, Toto, UFO and Eddie Money (especially looking back almost 4 decades later) were surprising standouts. It was weird that Toto played both days and this was right around when they debuted with their first album. Ted Nugent was just ok and Aerosmith was not very good in part because they had an awful sound mix and to be fair, we were pretty burned out after two days and sleeping overnight between Sat/Sun in my friend's car. In fact, on the 2nd day, we passed on seeing several of the early afternoon bands (April Wine, Brownsville Station, Toto for the 2nd time) to take short naps in the circus tent that had the laser light shows. There weren't any seats in the tent, it was just lay on the grass inside, get out of the sun, eat, drink, whatever and in our case, crash for an hour or so and try to power through the previous night's hangover. We also browsed the "rock n' roll flee market" which was inside the next door Sports Arena - I remember picking up a bunch of bootleg band shirts from one seller and this was where I bought VHII from another seller which had just come out in the past couple weeks.

The thing I remember clearly about VH's set was during one song, Roth is talking about how hot it is, blah, blah, blah and the camera for the big screens zoom in on Dave's crotch and all the girls are squealing like its The Beatles.

I still have my program, long ago ruined and threw away the jersey (which was different from the one pictured in the article). Here's a scan of the center page spread that shows the layout on the LA Coliseum/Sports Arena grounds.
