Default Why Is Feminism Viewed As A Negative?

I see people bring up the word feminism or feminist as an insult or in negative terms and I am curious as to why that is, since feminist simply means you are an advocate of the rights and equality of women.

So why is that a bad thing?

I think a lot of 21st century people don't really understand the true nature of feminism, or what it means.

Weirdly, I have more sympathy (for want of a better word) for MRAs castigating the notion of feminism (and feminists) than I do for women who post sneeringly about it on social media.

At least with those men who are 'anti-feminist', you can sort of understand their feelings (although not excuse their viciousness) - because a lot of them fear, and are angered by, a perceived loss of privilege - they see feminism as a threat, rather than something to be celebrated and from which they can benefit, as part of a civilised society.

Women who deride feminism and spout off about it make me very cross - because they fail to appreciate that the only reason they have the freedom to say what they're saying, and the means by which to read and write about it, is because of the feminist movement.

Now I'll just wait for the comments about all feminists being angry, ugly, fat, old lesbians...

Ask ten feminists what feminism means, and you will get ten different answers.

When someone says they are a feminist, I have no idea what they mean by it.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

It's not. Many of those who proudly call themselves feminists strike me more as men hating than equality loving though.

I imagine you might have a little bitterness toward men, if you were a woman and found out that all the men at your bank are being paid more than you are.

If that was true then I would be. But it's not.

I have two daughters. One wants to be a cop, one wants to be a doctor. I don't view their options any different than that of my son. Fighting for equality is nice and all but it's already done. My girls have the same futures my son does.

you want to post a study you haven't read as evidence of this?

Truth be told currently the opposite is true. Major corporations are trying like hell to promote women. My company has an HR team who's sole purpose it is to find future female leaders.

You know - posting one very recent study from New York, which already confirms that they support my view - but that I didn't fully read yet doesn't apply to everything.

Do you think it's OK that women are asked if they plan to get pregnant during job interviews?

anyone who did that here would be shown the door. Next question.

Here's truth about women moving up the corporate ladder. At some point in a person's corporate career they need to decide what their priority is. Is it their work life or their family life? It can't be both if you really want to move up. The percentage of men willing to put their jobs ahead of their families is much higher than the percentage of women who make that same choice.

It's happening in Toronto and elsewhere and has been a recent story in the media. Good thing your company wouldn't do that.

It can be both - many successful women have proven that.

I consider myself a feminist, in the spirit of the definition set forth in the OP, and I also consider myself pro-men's rights. There are subsets of feminists who annoy me, however. Those that shut men down because they are men; with them it seems as if a man isn't allowed to have an opinion unless it's the right one. There are also smaller groups of men's rights activists who annoy me. They freely talk about women in a degrading manner, like racists using the n-word. They would call someone like me a pussy. There are other smaller groups within both camps that I find distasteful; those are a couple of examples. So when people broadly use "feminism" and "men's rights" as pejoratives, I assume they're talking about minorities that exist within the greater whole.

it rarely is my friend. It rarely is. You're either married to your spouse or the office once you hit a certain level.
