Default Sammy Hagar: Ready to make peace with Eddie!!

Sammy Hagar Is Ready to Make Peace With Eddie Van Halen.

"I've realized that I don't want to take any enemies to my grave," says Red Rocker

BY ANDY GREENE March 25, 2016

Sammy Hagar hasn't spoken to Eddie Van Halen face-to-face in 12 years, but he's willing to change that.

Earlier this month, Sammy Hagar bumped into Metallica frontman James Hetfield. "The first thing he said was, 'Is it true?" says Hagar. "I said, 'What?' He goes, 'That you guys [in Van Halen] are getting back together.' I said, 'News to me. I'm not one that goes around hush hush. I'll tell you whatever I know.' He goes, 'You're kidding.' I told him, 'I'm telling you straight up, James. I don't have a clue.'"

Hetfield had apparently picked up on the same Van Halen rumors that have been flying around the Internet for months, namely that David Lee Roth has once again left Van Halen and the group is ready to reunite with Sammy Hagar. The rumors appear to be based on very little other than David Lee Roth agreeing to play a few songs with his Eat 'Em and Smile solo band late least year, an unusually frank Eddie interview where he admitted he has virtually no offstage relationship with Roth, a brief Twitter exchange between Eddie and Hagar and a general sense that last summer's Van Halen tour was a bumpy ride. But Hagar and Michael Anthony have dates with a reunited Chickenfoot this year and are touring with The Circle, and they've had no offline communication with Eddie Van Halen since the 2004 reunion tour wrapped.

All that said, Hagar - who ripped into Eddie Van Halen last year in a profanity-laden web video when he insulted Michael Anthony's bass playing in a Billboard interview - says he had an epiphany shortly before New Year's regarding the situation. "I realized that I didn't want to take any enemies to my grave," he says. "If I K.O. tomorrow, I don't want to have an enemy. I don't know how the afterlife works, but I'd just as soon not go there with any enemies."

The back-to-back deaths of David Bowie and Glenn Frey in the new year only made him feel stronger about it. "I've never seen so many guys from my era K.O. like that," he says. "Bowie was my hero. It was one after the other, even a young guy like Scott Weiland. He inducted me in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. You just go, 'Aw, man!'"

About a week after Glenn Frey died, Eddie Van Halen turned 61. Hagar's webmaster asked him if he wanted to post a photo of the two of them together to mark the occasion. "I said, 'No, I'll do it,'" says Hagar. "I put it on my Twitter and said, 'Happy Birthday Eddie - hope you're doing good.' I thought, 'Aw, fuck. Life is too short.'" Much to his surprise, Eddie (or whoever runs his social media accounts) wrote back, "Thanks Sammy. Hope you're well too.'" Says Hagar: "That was trippy."

The exchange only added to rumors of a Van Hagar resurgence, but the singer says he will not be the first one to reach out. "It would be misinterpreted," he says. "I know the way those guys think. 'Oh, he wants something! He wants back in the band. He must be broke.' I'm sorry, but unless they've changed drastically, which when I've talked to people that do know them it sounds like they haven't changed at all, it would be misinterpreted. I also don't want to provoke that. That's not what I'm looking for in my life now.'"

But if they did reach out, Hagar says he'd be quite amenable to a get-together. "I'd say, 'Fuck yeah, let's get some coffee,'" he says. "If I did it myself I'd be way too vulnerable. I'd be in a room with the guys like, 'No, no. You don't understand. That's not what I'm talking about. I just want to be friends. And once we're friends, we can do anything. Until that is proven, I can't be in a band with you guys, or whatever.'"

In the unlikely event the Van Halen brothers do want to reunite with Hagar, he says he'd never even consider it if they didn't also bring back original bassist Michael Anthony. "There's no scenario I'd do it without Mikey," he says. "Absolutely not. I would do a solo album with Ed. We can call it the Sam and Ed Show or the Ed and Sam Show. But there's no such thing as a Van Halen reunion without Mikey. I think they just proved that."

For now, Hagar is focused on his upcoming work with the Circle and Chickenfoot. "The [Van Halen] rumors are going to be out there, but what else could the rumors be?" he says."If Dave did leave again, do the math. The last time there was about three people they could have called. In this case, there is only one. But I'm not waiting by the phone."

Be nice at their ages if they could stop hating each other at the very least. We all know Sam won't take part in VH without Mike, no surprise there.

Kind of neat when coupled with the Mike & Alex talked thread, no?
All speculation, yadda, yadda, yadda. But still...

Sam's remark about not ever doing it unless "they" had changed drastically? Well, we all know who that means, and we all know that Ed has changed in a dramatic way since 2004 - for the better.

    Again..., interesting...

It'd happen if Ed wasn't a bitter fucking prick.
Sammy did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it.
Michael did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it.

However, Sammy said in that interview that he'd heard that Ed and Al hadn't changed at all. Sammy was probably referring to the brothers' way of doing business, not Ed's health/sobriety.

Does anybody have an idea who he might be speaking to that would give him this impression? Outside of Azoff, I mean.

Yeah I doubt Sam is talking about Ed's sobriety, but his attitude about band business. And yeah judging by Dave being a hired hand it doesn't seem too much probably has changed that way.

Ed has changed in a good way since 2004 and that's been great news for all of us and his health, but I don't think he's changed that much where he's ready to say I was f'd up in 2004 and I'm sorry for things that happened. I don't think that's ever changing unfortunately.

You could very well be right. I'm not saying that I have all of, or any of, the answers. Just that it's interesting.

Could be as simple as Ed and Al not wanting to continue without Wolf? Could be that if they did, they won't reinstate Mike's "rights"? Could be a lot of things. No different than the Dave only fans grasping at straws during the 90's - for example.

Sam did say he'd be up for a solo album with Eddie. I'd be up for that too!
    Again..., we'll see.

And for the record? If VH come back with Dave, I'll be at the show. With a better video camera this time! LOL.

yeah, I don't think the "they haven't changed at all" comment had anything to do with drinking. Ed's in a much better place now with this health. At 61 he's kicking back and enjoying his life. He's already had life threatening issues crop up. While some of you may believe that he should be thinking that life is too short to hold grudges and to mend things with Sammy, more than likely he's thinking that life is too short to open up that pandora's box again. Ed might be open to communication, but a deeper relationship or working relationship would be too much to risk. And Sammy giving these interviews that always manage to include a little backhand swipe don't help to convince otherwise, I'm sure.
