    Default 5150 30th Anniversary

30 years ago today Van Halen released their seventh studio album ď5150″. Released in 1986 on Warner Bros. Records. It was the first of four albums to be recorded with new lead singer Sammy Hagar, who replaced David Lee Roth.
It was named after Eddie Van Halenís home studio, 5150, itself named after a California law enforcement term for a mentally disturbed person (a reference to Section 5150 of the California Welfare and Institutions Code). The 5150 name has been used several times by Van Halen. The album hit number 1 on the Billboard 200 chart, surpassing the bandís previous album, 1984, which had peaked at number 2 at the same time as Michael Jacksonís Thriller album, on which Eddie Van Halen made a guest appearance..

Yeah, we know. You tried but just couldn't get into it. It wasn't the same and the "swagger" was gone...blah fucking blah...

This album is legend and a classic. Long live 5150!

I love this album. Every song is perfect. A friend and I are gonna have a mini-listening party later today to "celebrate" it. Yes, we're listening on vinyl.
    I'm just here.

This was the album that got me into VH.
I don't think it's their best album but it's my favourite for setting me on a journey I've never looked back from.
Summer Nights and 5150 are probably/definitely the 2 songs I've listened to the most in my life.
Thrashed this album more than any in my early teens.
Have great memories with this album.

    favorite record period.

I hope this thread doesn't go down the toilet.

I honestly listened to it everyday for about 2 years straight and still listen to it all the time today (had it on this morning on the way to work). I think it's fantastic.

Great time to be a VH fan, I love everything about that era-baggy pink pants, wife beaters and bad Sam hair and all, it was just a great time to be a fan.

It was different, but still a very good album.

I was bummed when i heard the first single WCTBL (just like I was bummed when i heard Jump on the radio before 1984 was released). Bought the album the first day it came out. Good Enough is ok. WCTBL...ugh, I still hate this song. Get Up...never got into this song. Summer Nights, BOBW and 5150 I loved them then and still love them. Love Walks In and Dreams....I knew they would be hits on the radio but tired of them very quickly (similar to I'll Wait). The Inside...why did they put that on the album? Overall, I think it was a wise move to bring Mick Jones from Foreigner in to help produce the album since he had a impressive string of radio friendly songs. The tour....enjoyed it, but was disappointed that they basically ignored the classic 6 pack. I would soon learn that this would be continued throughout the Sammy era.

It's a good album that hasn't aged well from a sonic perspective, at least for me. It was the 2nd VH album I owned. I bought it because of BOBW. That, Summer Nights, and 5150 are standout tracks. Good Enough and Dreams are just a nitch below for me. LWI is a well crafted tune with two superb solos from Edward. Inside has a fun groove. Get Up is okay I like the power of Al's double bass. WCTBL is my least favorite song on the record. It's not HMSI bad so I still like it, but I don't seek it out.

I wish they would have recorded this album with the Humans Being or Balance sound. It would've made it a lot better.
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

the sonic quality doesn't bother me anymore. It sounds fine on my IPOD, it sounds fine in my car. the only time I even notice it is when I have my IPOD set to random and something newer comes on. Yes, it would be nice if it had the sonic quality of Balance or FUCK but I think at this point it's beating a dead horse.

the electric drums don't even bother me anymore, they used to but at one point I just stopped thinking about them. it's a dead horse thing again.

Someone mentioned why they brought in Mick Jones, as I understand it that was kind of a warner bros call. they wanted a "known" guy in there. Ed and Sam were going to do it themselves and warner didn't want that.

I would have liked to hear what the record sounded like with Templeman producing it but if he did there would still be people on here today bitching about that. I don't think EEAS sounds any "better" production wise than 5150, maybe the bass is turned up on EEAS but aside from that they both sound like hard rock records recorded in 1986.

I still remember buying it at the Wherehouse on Beach Blvd and Lincoln Ave (long gone) the day it came out on my way to Huntington Beach with my girlfriend, who is now my wife of 26+ years.

Excellent album and their best with Sammy.

I didn't get mine until after I saw Unleashed, it had to be October or November and I got it at Kresggies which used to be a big "dime store" in my area.
