    Ed's lost his creativity?

    Hardly.

A couple of riffs from NAMM 1996...beautiful stuff that I wish had seen the light of day:

(Yeah it was 20 years ago, but it makes me wonder what Ed has in the vault)

Yeah, I think its safe to say there's enough in the vault for a record.

That riff starting around :56 seconds would have been a kick ass Hagar tune.

So this is Jan 18, 1996. Where does this stand in the VH timeline? Was Hagar out yet? Was Dave back recording yet? When were the MTV awards?

    A few disconnected thoughts:

Lots of cool stuff there. One of the last times Ed was speaking lucidly before tailing off into a haze of booze and self-loathing.

I like the end part where he is playing the Humans Being riffs with a little different flair.

Ed has one of the unique right hands in history of guitar. The way he strums--his angle of attack, his wrist movements, the changes in speed, intensity, angle on the strings--all together with his perfect pocket rhythm flows like a Himalayan river. This is where I feel like Ed's reliance in the later years on more preamp overdrive kind of restrained his skills. He used to get so much sound right from his hands, especially the right one.

I know that Ed used talk all the time about wrestling with the guitar. Perhaps that is what made him so good in the first place?

That's like the classic Ed we all grew up on, that we all love. Something happened a few months later, and he became almost a different person. He's still speaking about Sammy being in the band in that video, he's not making a bad face while talking about Sam or anything. He's in a really great mood compared to many other vids I've seen. Also on a personal note, this is about 6-8 months after I met EVH backstage on the Balance tour.

I've watched this video countless times. Great stuff!

Love the lucidity and the approach. He's not a public speaker, yet was having a sense of humor, although being (by his own admission) nervous and out of his comfort zone. Kudos to him for that.

Nice playing and a neat look into his thoughts about the early dealings with Peavey and his Wolfgang guitars.
Regarding Wolfgang? Loved the story about playing 316 on Val's pregnant belly, and how his son ended up loving it!!!
