    Default Van Halen II Anniversary

    http://www.vhnd.com/van-halen-ii/

Van Halen II was a solid follow-up to the band's ground-breaking debut. The album boasts some fun and enduring songs: Dance the Night Away, Somebody Get Me a Doctor, and Beautiful Girls. Spanish Fly is a magical piece of music that is a staple of Ed's live solos. While a very good album, Van Halen II, for me, lacks the panache of its predecessor and its successor. Six of the album's ten tracks could be considered deep cuts in the Van Halen catalog: You're No Good, Bottoms Up, Outta Love Again, DOA, Light Up the Sky, and Women in Love. Van Halen II is a worthy Van Halen album, but most of the tracks seem, to me, like a collection of leftovers from Van Halen.

VHII is an absolute beast. It lacks nothing. I mean, of course there is leftovers from VH 1. Hell, 1984 has leftovers from VH1. The second album brings to light the magic of four guys beginning to enjoy life.

Cool. I'm glad you love it. I like it a lot, but I rarely listen to the album outright.

Van Halen II flows better than the first album for me. It's more cohesive, not an album of singles like the first.

    Default Van Halen II Anniversary

I like VH2 better than the debut. More fun and sunny Van Halen vibe when they came into their Mighty stride

I'm glad you liked it but it was a step down from Van Halen and Women and Children First was a step up from Van Halen II.

I like II better than the debut as well. The drums are definitely showcased better, but I just like the collection of songs better.

What if Van Halen II had been the debut? It may have been a slow starter for the band.

Van Halen II was a great follow up to Van Halen, but there is no way that it is a better overall album.

If it had been the debut, this forum wouldn't exist.

It wasn't the debut. It was a kick ass follow up to a kick ass debut.

probably all preference and experience ;-)

the debut is of course iconic. But to me... VH "Big Rock" didn't start until VH II. The debut probably has too many overplayed radio songs that knock it down for me. Essential VH songs, for sure.

Are you kiddin' me? VHII is another masterpiece! Back then, I liked it just as much as the first one. It has everything. Great cover tune, mellow sounds, instrumental, rampaging beasts like LUTS, some of the greatest riffs in the history of riffage.....It's epic!!
As said, it's when they became the VH we knew and loved, as well. "Bottoms Up, I say yeah!"

By mid 80's I was burned out on VH1. Since then I reach for VHII.

Well, if you want my opinion, the VHND review is about half way down the VH2 page, here:

Van Halen II: Twice The Pleasure, Twice The Fun

It's pretty fucking glowing. I hope you all take a minute to read it. I think you'll love it.
