Default How do YOU play the intro to Light Up the Sky?

The very first notes of the song, before the drums come in - pick stroke up on 4th/down on 3rd or down on 4th/down on 3rd?

Me too. And lately I've been using that as a picking exercise. Doing it over and over. Up and down the neck. Etc.
VH III is Ed's solo album. So everybody who keeps saying they wish he'd do one needs to stfu and listen to III. Then stfu again.

How can you play it down (4th) up (3rd)? Isn't that the most inefficient way? Seems to be impossible to do that at speed. I keep the pick always between 4th and 3rd, up on 4th, down on 3rd. Even then it's an exercise at speed.

Actually, if I think about it I play it down, down.

Maybe I need to revisit that...
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

So funny you bring this up because I've been struggling with the best way to play it recently. Ed plays it down up Which you can see in the stealth demo video with the GoPro. I like to play it between the strings like you are saying but some days it's just
" off" doing it. Playing that strict alternate is hard for me. Strange.

First, I get out my phone, tap music, scroll to Van Halen, then pick Van Halen II, then....
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

Just watched that. Wow. Will try it, but I still the way I do it is most economical of motion .... which doesn't really matter if I don't practice it a lot. We have to count that off at band practice, but there's no count on the album, so I usually miss the first two notes.

Down on the d, up on the g. It took me a while to get that going smoothly and quickly but I'm pretty good at it now. I played it slow for a real long time and now it's just 2nd nature. My alternate picking is pretty good though so it was just a matter of getting some reps in. I'm still struggling with the part right before "open your eyes and leave it all behind". I've watched the 5150 video where Ed plays it and for the life of me I can't get what he's doing, it's a little move he does that has me messed up.

Agreed. He plays that much differently than I thought. I must have watched him doing what you are talking about in the 7 th position area a hundred times and I can't tell either. I just play it B then the suspended note ? with the pinky and hop up to the open E. Should be easy but Ed just plays those little nuanced things and they are very difficult. It's just a feel thing that he probably does a little different here and there.

That's the way I play it! Before my phone, I'd take the CD out of the case, load it...Press "6". I Played it perfectly every time.

Down, up, down, up....I've been trying to work on speed a lot lately, (and because I play a lot of metal I have to work on alternate picking anyway,) but because of Lick Library and Andy James, I am at this point VERY used to doing alternates, even if I have to go to the outsides of the string.

Learning how to do down up on the INSIDES of the string is where it's going to get interesting...
