Default Question For Those That Saw Van Halen With Gary Cherone Live

I never saw Van Halen with Gary and I was curious to know if it was obvious to the audience that this band wasn't going to work?

Forget about VH3. Could you tell watching the band live?

I know some people praise the fact that Gary sang both Roth and Hagar songs - despite his prancing, but what was the take away for you when you saw Van Cherone? A hopeful future or a sinking ship?

I do think it's cool that Eddie and Mike doing some lead vocals here:

Well, by the end of the show I saw at the Gorge in Washington State, the crowd was chanting "Gary! Gary!" It was an awesome concert with a great setlist. But that tour would've been HUGE if they had done it with Dave.

Cool. At the time, did you want to see what Gary could do on a second album if reports were true at the time that they were going to make a more familiar Van Halen album with Danny Kortchmar.

The record was enough. I didn't need to see it to know it was a mistake.

I recently DL'd a Cherone era VH boot, and yeah, it just didn't work at all for me.
Stuff like "Unchained" just sounded "off."

And i loved Extreme, so i had no issues with Gary as a singer.

I liked the music, but I didn't care for how he sang the Dave stuff. Especially, Mean Street. "This is Mean Street" lyric sounded so wussy.

Actually, I did. I figured they were done forever with Dave after the MTV fiasco, and I enjoyed the setlist on the III tour much much more than any Sam tour. If having Gary in the band was the only way I was ever going to get to see Al and Ed blaze on classics like Romeo Delight and SGMAD, then I wanted to see what they could do in the studio with a tour under their belt.

After that record I was thinking....end it. Make a career out of releasing stuff from the vault.

I had to go to the show in 98 because I do not pass on Ed being in town or close by. Here's how it unfolded and felt for me. There was a House of Blues sized crowd at a shed that holds 20K plus. Ed ran out on stage to get us all energized with a guitar blitz, then broke into Unchained. My smile quickly vanished when Gary walked out on stage. My worst nightmare was real. I was so embarrassed for Van Halen and I felt sorry for Gary. Gary did not fit in at all. It was the equivalent of Adam Lambert singing for Pantera or Bon Scott singing lead for Lawrence Welk. The Gary Cherone debacle remains the greatest travesty and tragedy of Van Halen's career.

So I guess Sammy coming back wasn't good news.

By 2004, I was happy they were at least finally back, but no, I was hoping it would be Dave, especially after all the rumors that had swirled around 2000-01 about them trying to work with Dave.

I still went to two shows in 04, Key Arena and Staples Center, and had fun even though obviously it wasn't a great tour.

It was an empty shed by the time they got to me.

Hearing the lead singer for Van Halen say "hey, everybody on the lawn, come on down!" was a "holy shit, it's over" moment.

That being said, they played really well, I enjoyed the show.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

    Preferred pronouns: he/him/his

Hurricane Halen - Let's all gingery touch our sword tips!!!
