Default Which Era Of Van Halen Do You Think Has The Best Sound Or Tone?

I think Van Halen have never sounded better than during the Balance, Humans Being, Me Wise Magic and VH3 years compared to the early era. Eddie's guitar sound is much more thick regardless if it's effects being used to achieve that, the band is much tighter and as Heisenberg said - there is a nice beefy badass low end.

We are not talking about quality of songs here - so don't bring up Fair Warning's quality of songs. We are just talking about Van Halen sonically and by comparison. No one is shitting on Van Halen's early sound - it's brilliant as well, but by comparison - it lacks that nice beefy badass low end and is THINNER. Not thin.

Van Halen achieved their absolute best sound in the mid to late 90's. It's irrelevant how that that was achieved - be it through production, effects or fairy dust.

This isn't a Dave vs. Sammy thread either, so shut the fuck up about that. Me Wise Magic And Can't Get This Stuff No More are among the best that the band has ever sounded.

We are just talking about sound/performance/production.

So when did Van Halen SOUND the best to you - regardless of how it was achieved. I say that, because I know some 6 pack die hards are going to bring up effects and production differences used on Balance vs. Fair Warning. That's fine - I don't care how the cake was made, I care about how it tastes and Van Halen were never more sonically tasty from Balance on.

Yes, but you said it yourself - you are a Dave or the grave Van Halen fan. Have you even listened to Balance?

I have, and i don't like the sound or the material.
It's not a bad sound, but it's a sound that, for me, has a sterile/of the times, tone.
His early approach was completely signature.

I prefer the more organic approach of the early albums:
Great hands, great head, couple pedals used sparingly, crank the volume, and there ya go!

Fair enough, but do you understand that I am not saying that Fair Warning sounds like this when I say thinner?

Motherload, thank you for taking it upon yourself to create a thread dedicated to this topic. I also created a thread of the same topic, I think shortly before you did. Yes, I was being a smart ass when I did it, but I would like to welcome you to that discussion. One of our threads will probably get shut down anyway.

I think thinner is the wrong term.
    Articulate is a better word.

Regardless, we have this same thread going elsewhere, started by Nobozos.

Classic era with Eddie playing raw and mean. It's even close. There's a reason Guitar World picked Van Halen's Top 50 songs only seven were from the Hagar era with the first Hagar era song ranked 29th. To me it's just the tone. In the classic era Eddie just seems to play with a lot more attitude.

We are not talking about quality of SONGS/the songwriting. You actually need to comprehend the words that you read.

    How about more trebly?

Not the same beefy low end.

Well if you read what a "guitar" magazine said about each of those songs in terms of tone and sound you might educate yourself.

Didn't Brett already tell you that you were wrong - they were only picking favorite songs. Nothing else.
