Default EVH Distortion pedal? Overdrive/distortion = same thing

I have been reading interviews with Eddie for over 30 years and EVERYTIME distortion is mentioned , Everytime, he says he has never used a distortion pedal and that that is what the amp is for......Everytime.

So his "This Is What I Use" slogan/motto means what?

It's for the market that does not own a 5150 amp. It is meant to make an amp sound like one of his amps. He does not use it because he uses his 5150.

    It's just a 5150 amp in a pedal.

I imagine he just wants to give people who don't have 5150s the option of the 5150 sound.

It did not make my Crate G600 sound like a 5150, so I returned it. I preferred my amp's overdrive settings over this pedal. I have heard it through other setups and it sounds good, just didn't work with mine.

    I think it's a great sounding pedal.

It's really the blue 5150iii channel in a box.

I hated the idea of this pedal and said so here. Yes Ed always insisted he never used a distortion pedal and wanted his amp to supply the gain. Yet he had a MXR Micro Amp on his board for a very long time. I suspect he used it for solos live probably up to and including the 1984 tour.

Then I got one of these MXR 5150 pedals as a gift. I waited a few hours before opening it. I was thinking about returning it. I, like Ed have changed my mind. It's a damn good pedal and does what it's designed to. It's a 5150 blue channel for those without a 5150. And with all the knobs cranked and the od button on it sounds like my old Peavey 5150. Which may or may not be a good thing. It has the treble and fizz of the old 5150. I used it through the green channel of my 5150 III 2x12 combo so I could switch quickly to the blue channel. It's very close. Then I put it through my Marshall Class 5 combo set very clean. It turned that little 10 inch combo into a thumping mini 5150. Again everything on 10. That was the biggest suprise and I would have bet against it sounding that good through the Class 5. My favorite though is using it to try and get old VH tones. So far it's not horrible at it. I haven't spent enough time to say for sure yet. I'll tell you this. The zZounds demo is exactly how the pedal sounds. Couple guys you know did demos and one for sure I knew used some extra eq. Probably both. zZounds demo is the only one I've seen where I went yeah, that's how it sounds to me. Next I've got a Vox VR30 combo collecting dust. I'm gonna try it through that and see how it sounds. That Vox has a pretty nice clean sound. I've got high hopes for the pairing.

It's supposed to be used on a clean sounding amp. Preferably a clean tube amp. I'll bet a back line 800 or something similar with it would rock. So In other words show up with the pedal and guitar and plug and rock!

I just found out this pedal existed today. I have fallen way off on guitar as I switched over to the drums, but it kind of rubbed me the wrong way. You know 10-15 years ago we were all searching for the the Brown sound. I went through tube amps and expensive weber attenuators, built a guitar with custom Warmoth parts to match the look and wood best I could back then, even hunted down an original Floyd Rose with the "good" metal and machining. Buying different types of speakers for the amps etc. etc. If you're old enough and had the itch bad enough you did it too. We did it in part to try to hear what Eddie was hearing, to feel it. The pedal just rubbed me the wrong way ....lol. Who knows, maybe I'll get one to use on my blues jr. that I am modding out.

The amp you plug the thing into matters, as I can personally attest to.

In a weird roundabout way, because of this pedal, I am actually going to be picking up a 5150III 50w head + EVH 1x12 cabinet later this month.

I've seen your demo video before, but it was good to recap it in this thread.
I'm currently using an MXR Super Badass pedal, although I haven't tried the new EVH one yet.

Any chance you could demo the MXR pedal sometime and share your settings/thoughts?
    No big deal if not...

Aw man, that would be cool!

Being that you're such a big EVH fan, I'd like to see what kinds of tones you can get out of it as well.
I'm currently running the bass/middle/treble at 12 o'clock, with the gain varying between !2 and 2 o'clock - depending on my mood.

I have both the super badass and the 5150 overdrive on my board. All my eq knobs are right around 12 o clock on the EVH. I have my minds slightly higher than my treble, and the bass right about the same as the mids. My output is at about 1 o clock, and my gain is at about 10:30.
