Default Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love vs Outta Love Again

Which of the two anti-love songs from the Dave era do you prefer? Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love, which contains one of Eddie's most iconic riffs, or Outta Love Again, which showcases one of Alex's all-time best performances?

I bet a lot of linkers are burned out on ATBL, which may garner OLA some votes. I love both of these songs, but that main riff from Eddie, Dave's stellar lyrics (maybe his best ever) and that awesome breakdown give the nod to the loveless tune from the debut album.

    Thoughts?
"It's so lonely at the top because it's so crowded at the bottom" - Diamond David Lee Roth

"If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving is not for you"

"Be careful what you wish for because you just might lose what you already have"

"Women and Children First ... The REAL Van Halen III"

Hmmm this is a REALLY close call for me. I know this is coming out of left field for me, but Al's powerhouse performance on OLA is giving it the ever so slim nod

No contest. Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love is a fist-pumping anthem. Everything about the track is perfect.

Similar for me. Actually Outta Love is one of my least favorite Van Halen songs. Now, when I say least favorite, it's like talking about one of my least favorite hook ups. They were all fun, but some were more fun than others.

The ATBL intro riff is the greatest electric guitar riff ever written IMO. That alone is enough for the win.
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

Definitely an iconic riff, but I think I give Unchained the nod for me for greatest riff ever.

In a lot of those other X vs X threads, I can understand the matchup.
This one makes me wonder why such a question was even posed... LOL.

ATBL has one of the greatest guitar riff intros EVER, IMO. Easily one of the most well known and respected, not to mention imitated, even among the vast catalog of our favorite band!

Outta Love Again is cool, yet not on the same level for me.
Reminds me of that lyric from D.O.A. , about being outta luck...
"There's too many people on this basketball that's floating around the sun, who are too afraid to allow themselves to FEEL" - Edward Van Halen
"Van Halen was never about the singer..." - a very wise fan.
"Embrace the past. Live in the moment but keep your eyes on the future, and keep on moving forward..." - Richie Sambora

Gotta go with ATBL. As mentioned, maybe the most iconic riff Eddie ever wrote and one of the best riffs ever written period.

I do love OLA of course. Eddie's sparse riff has a lot of space and simplicity which gives it power. I love the first "solo" for that reason too. It's kinda mean sounding. The second solo is just awesome. Eddie's rhythm sounds like something no other guitarist would have ever though of. Dave's vocal is another one of his that no other singer could pull off.

The drumming was a negative for me though. I think Alex overplays on that track. Waaay too much snare all over the place in the verses. I always wished Alex would have gone with something John Bonham would have done. He would probably have matched the vibe of the main riff and made it powerful and epic. Plenty of room in the song to throw in more complex stuff without doing a Ginger Baker imitation and making the song a drum solo. (yeah I love Bonham and hate Baker)

Outta Love does have that cool main riff! It has room to breath and throw in some added dynamics - mutes, pinch harmonics, accents, etc.
It almost reminds me of the unreleased I Wanna Be Your Lover, in that regard.

Solo #1 has all those Billy Gibbons-esque pick harmonics and low bended notes.
Solo #2 has some great licks! Interesting phrasing and note choices. I used to jam this one...

The flanger effect(s) at the intro of the song are pretty cool, too!

The first time I ever heard "She's The Woman" (I think it was back around 1996 when I bought the bootleg "Van Halen '77 + Live), the main guitar riff immediately reminded me of the main guitar riff from "Outta Love Again". I always thought that Eddie re-worked "STW" for what became "OLA".

I find it interesting how we, as fans, can often hear similar things. On the flipside, is how we can interpret things so differently... LOL.

I always equated STW with the mindset & approach Ed used on ITO or We Die Young, etc. Riding the open A string with diads on the D & G strings.
Cool, either way. Obviously a motif he liked using back then!

I play along to Outta Love Again all the time and almost never to ATBL, so OLA gets the nod for me.
