Default Women In Love vs Secrets

Probably the two songs that came the closest to being ballads by CVH. Both feature some of Dave's best vocal work, but lyrically I give the edge to Secrets' more clever and creative phrasings. I like Mike's playing better on Secrets, but Women In Love features the classic VH soaring harmonies prominently. Ed's double neck guitar sounds great on Secrets, WIL features that album's classic tone.

In the end, though, the clincher is Ed's absolutely beautiful "clock like" intro to Women In Love which pushes it to victory for me. One of his top 5 guitar intros ever.

Your last two sentences mirror my thoughts exactly. Although, Secrets is also a great song and one of the highlights of Diver Down.

    Secrets all day and everyday.

WIL: after the majestic intro, I usually press stop, although I do like the song.

    Love them both. A lot.

WIL has that gorgeous melody, that chime like intro, that great pre-chorus & chorus.
Secrets contains my second favorite Edward solo of all time, plus i love the lyrics
and melody and Ed's turnaround back into the chorus.

Dave sings like an angel on both tracks.

    It's a tie!

yeah this one is extremely close for me.

WIL ... I absolutely love that intro (some of my strongest memories first hearing VHII are that intro and song)

Secrets... similar stuff. I might give the nod for Ed's solo

They really missed an opportunity by not playing Women In Love on "Ellen" last year ...

WIL. That intro is one of the most beautiful pieces Eddie ever wrote imo. And it is also one of his most important innovations to guitar playing and one of the things I would play for someone to demonstrate how he was different than other guitarists. That's two unbeatable things...and the song has barely started.

Then that slow riff starts and the brown sound drips from it...making it majestic. It's a tribute to VH II that this riff is "only" my 5th favorite riff from that album. Jesus...Eddie wrote a lot of great riffs! They bring the dynamics down and Dave wrote the perfect melody for it. I love how they punch it back up for that A chord too.

Then Eddie slides into that riff which brings in the chorus and my pulse quickens. That's a cool riff man! And it's all over the chorus. Oh...but now Mike and Eddie and going to join in with that patented VH harmony to bring it up another notch! Not fair to other bands!

Not sure what made Eddie think of that solo. It's simple. Just hammer on/pull off licks. But it's awesome!

The ending sequence is slow burning power. Those harmonics that Eddie hits at 3:29 give me chills. Dave reels it in with a soft version of his scream and brings it all to a perfect cascading ending.
