It's hard to narrow so many great albums down to just 5 favorites.
Hell, it's sometimes difficult to do that even with some bands...

Ozzy's Tribute album w/Randy, is one of my fav's too!
See what I said earlier? So much great stuff - it's hard to limit it just a few albums.

Here we go, in no particular order:

Van Halen - II or WACF

Joe Perry Project - Let the music do the talking

    Lush - Split

    Brian Jonestown Massacre - Revelation

    GNR - Appetite

    Beth Orton - Sugaring Season

I might change my mind with more thought on it, but here goes.

Albums I couldn't do without on a desert island.

    Van Halen
    Led Zeppelin - Physical Graffiti
    The Beatles - Revolver
Rush - Moving Pictures (just for Red Barchetta, Camera Eye, and Witch Hunt)
    The Cars

Kills me to not put Johnny Cash or Frank Sinatra on there, but their compilations are so much better than their stand alone albums.

Great list. The Camera Eye is totally epic.

That's because Sting would let Andy or Stewart write a song, just to appease them.

The brilliance of this band is even illustrated in their simplest of song's:
When the world is runnin' down...

The whole song is one progression, repeated, yet it's soooooooo good.

What do you think of this deep cut from GITM?

The Police were always more of a singles band than an album band, much like a lot of the new wave of the time and pop music in general. That Sting largely carried the burden alone is probably another reason their albums are uneven. I love Andy and Stewart's contributions and their band chemistry, their songs not so
much. Although Omega Man is a highlight on GitM.

Similar topic on FB recently. Made me realize I don't really think in terms of favorites or bests in terms of pop culture. I like different things for different reasons. That said, some great examples of bands who exploited the
album format to great effect (bypassing obvious choices like Floyd, Hendrix or the Beatles)
    - who created a universe and took you on a journey - off the top of my head:

Deloused in the Comatorium - Mars Volta
    OK Computer - Radiohead
Good Appollo (IV) - Coheed and Cambria
    Blackstar - Bowie
    Crack the Skye - Mastodon
