Default Has Eddie lost his passion?

This is not a Sammy vs. Dave thread.

The truth is that both Sam and Dave continue to explore different outlets for their creativity. New songs, radio, TV, internet, art, books, food, whatever. Whichever side you take in the age-old battle of the lead singers, you have to admit that these guys have a passion to create.

Ed does not appear to have that drive. ADKOT was a great album but it was compiled from hooks written long ago. His work with LL Cool J was fun, but Ed had been so prolific for such a long time -- VH, Beat It, scoring TV and movies, Star Fleet with Brian May, uncredited Back to the Future, Thomas Dolby, and on and on. But I don't know whether he still burns with the same creative fire. It is hard to criticize him -- after all, I've never been lucky enough to meet him -- and he may have his reasons.

Personally, I would love for him not to feel the weight of the Van Halen legacy. Pull a Santana -- record with whoever you want. Instead of forcing it with Dave or Sammy, record with a number of people, none expected to be the next Van Halen singer. Might not be what we all want -- but it could be magic.

Probably, but 99.99% of 60 year olds have less passion than they did at 30.

I'm all for Edward doing a solo record. And an intimate club/shed tour to support it.

Hard to say. He obviously has to have been woodshedding a lot in 5150 to be able to play live so incredibly as he has the last two tours, so I don't think he's lost his passion for playing. It's impossible to say if he's lost his passion for creating. Truth is, we don't know what's in the 5150 storage, but he may not write what he thinks VH fans want to hear anymore, so who knows?

I do think he's definitely lost any desire to deal with most of the BUSINESS side of making and releasing music.

I believe Ed is tired of it all. It seems to me that Eddie VanHalen has grown very tired of being Eddie VanHalen.
While he loves all that comes with it--if he doesn't play guitar for a few months or do anything musical its no big deal to him.

    I don't think it's a question of passion - it's a question of money.
If there's money to be made, Ed will be passionate about it (i.e. his EVH line of gear, touring)

Bottom line is that albums just don't sell like they used to.
There's no money in it so what would Ed's motivation be to write and record new material when he can easily make just as much money off his existing material?

Because he is supposedly an artist and a modern day Mozart? Just throwing that out there.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

But, we don't know for sure, maybe he does write and record new material. He just may not feel like VH fans will want to hear it, if it's different than what he used to write, so he doesn't release it.

But he'll still be considered those things even if he never writes another song ever again, so I don't see how that would motivate him at this stage in his life and career.

You mean he's up to 11 albums worth of material now? He was stuck at 10 for the last 20 years it seems...

He certainly hasn't lost his passion relearning, if you will, and pretty much nailing a lot of the classic material on the last 2 tours. Dude sounded fantastic.

As far as new music, it SEEMS like he has lost his passion, but outside of his opinion about nobody wanting to hear new music, just the classics, people listen for free/don't buy albums, ect, we can only speculate.

Just happy the guy is still with us, even though he is very frustrating at times.
