uh, I stopped reading when the article pondered whether paying for sources "tarnished TMZ's credibility"

TMZ is owned by Time Warner/AOL which also owns People Magazine

where Radar Online is owned by the same company that owns Us and National Enquirer magazines

and there are dozens more of these sites....x17online, defamer, crazydaysandnights, Laney gossip

there's a ton of dough in celebrity gossip (they get major mainstream advertisers) and just like the old days of movie magazines, up and coming entertainers and their managers and publicists use these sites to promote their projects and their clients.

and sometimes they are in the right place at the right time and break national stories.....John Edwards love child, Donald Sterlings racism, ray Rice beating his wife

but if you are looking to these sites for anything more than cheap celebrity gossip, you're wasting your time

To be fair, TMZ has broken some major REAL NEWS stories well before the "respectable" media. In fact, the media has to give credit to TMZ and I am sure someone at CNN is saying in a meeting - how did we not get this before TMZ? What the fuck am I paying you people for?

TMZ was the first to report Michael Jackson's death by a couple hours. On the other hand, these places work with people like the Kardashians and they get a cut of what photos and videos of them sell for. It's a strange business, but it isn't hard journalism.
