    Default D Tuna on the Sterling AX4. What am I doing wrong?

    It only goes up a half step. I know the basic setup routine, but am like, WTF?

    I had issues with my AX40 when I first got it. I was going to replace the bridge with a Gotoh bridge but went a cheaper route and just rebuilt the bridge. I believe the issue lies with the saddles. Here's a link to what I did to mine and now the D Tuna works fine.

    I've owed a few of the AX40 guitars. Tried putting D-tunas on all of them, yet none of them "took", fully.
    Watching a YT video of a guy playing "Beat It", with an AX40 & D-tuna, made me send him a reply. His response was that he had similar issues, and simply replaced/swapped out the base plate of the stock Sterling trem, for a Floyd Rose one. It has to do with the angle of the whale tail piece and how the fine tuners sit.

    I ordered a couple of Floyd Rose base plates, installed them, and had great success. No issues at all!

    I think I'm probably going to just live without a D-Tuna on that one. Well, for now, anyway.

    I hear ya, but it's not that hard to do.
    Not to mention that you can pick up those base plates fairly cheap, as long as they as built to Floyd specs. Here's two of my old AX40's with the new plates and D-tunas;

    What baseplates did you order? I've found some of the Floyd Rose branded Ping tremolos to have similar problems.

    Has anyone else had issues with the fine tuner screw falling out? That's happened to me two times now. The first time they resent me just the screw, then it fell out again. Second time, they concluded that the threads in the unit weren't tight enough so they sent me a completely new one which was unbelievably cool, as opposed to the typical "must be your fault go buy a new one" thing you normally get.

    D-Tuna is run by Adam Reiver, the same guy who runs FU-Tone Floyd Upgrades. I follow him on IG and have e-mailed him a few times. He seems like such a good all around dude, so it's no surprise to me that he took care of you and sent a new D-Tuna.

    I just looked up "Floyd Rose Special Baseplate" on eBay, and bought a couple. Can't recall the exact seller/store name off the top of my head, but I can look into it if you want, Jedi.

    Let me reiterate - the baseplates were an exact fit on the Sterling trems, and accommodated the D-tunas perfectly, without any issues. Everything else (bridge saddles, string lock bolts, trem blocks) were from the original Sterling branded bridges.

    Short answer is YES!!!
    It's a pain in the ass, because the fine tuner screws can come out easily, and are also easily lost!!! Been there, done that. Another problem I had, was getting them back in to the D-Tuna's themselves. I cross threaded two of them by accident. I was actually considering trying to find a titanium unit like Ed is rumored to use.

    In a way, glad I'm not the only one. And yeah, when it falls out, it's gone forever. I put a dab of Elmer's over the fine tuner once it was adjusted. Hopefully that'll solve it.

    It's the stress that the device and the fine tuner put on the threads. I guess some are just machined better than others.

    That's a theory I have. Some are made better than others. OG Peavey ones being the best. Then the ones they sold were different. Shinier and slippery. New EVH ones on guitars seem better than the individually sold ones. I hear the individual ones have improved. I don't know for sure.

    I own all versions and they work flawlessly for me. Even the one on the old Pat. Pending PV Wolf!
