Default A Different Kind of Rank Your Favorite VH ALbums Thread ...

In an honest effort to try and avoid yet another "Dave vs Sam" debate, rank the (7) VH studio albums with Dave in one list and the (4) VH studio albums with Sam in a separate list. Let's attempt to discuss our (2) lists independently without bringing the "Dave vs Sam" nonsense into it.

    Dave era:

    Van Halen
    Fair Warning
    Van Halen II
    1984
    Women And Children First
    A Different Kind Of Truth
    Diver Down

    Sam era:

    5150
    OU812
    For Unlawful Carnal Knowledge
    Balance
"It's so lonely at the top because it's so crowded at the bottom" - Diamond David Lee Roth

"If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving is not for you"

"Be careful what you wish for because you just might lose what you already have"

"Women and Children First ... The REAL Van Halen III"

Interesting thought, yet, as Van Halen are an entity with several albums/eras/lineups, separating them seems like musical segregation! LOL.

    I'll play, though;
Dave stuff - 1984, VH, FW, ADKoT, VHII, WACF, Tokyo Live, DD.

Sammy stuff - 5150, FUCK, OU812, RHRN, Balance.

"Van Halen was never about the singer..." - a very wise fan.

Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

    Era 1:

    3-Way Tie:
    VH
    VH2
    Fair Warning

a HAIR under those, roughly a tie:

    Women & Children, 1984

    A HAIR under those:
    ADKOT

Far below those, but still LOVE it:
    Diver Down

    Era 2:

    OU812
    5150

    A little bit under those:
    F.U.C.K.

    Much lower down:

    Balance

    Rating the non-album songs:
Me Wise Magic (by far my favorite non-album song)
    Humans Being

    4-Way Tie:
Can't Get This Stuff No More
    It's About Time
    Up For Breakfast
    Learning To See

    * About the Live albums: I don't count them.

**About ADKOT: I am one of those people who thinks I died and went to heaven when I'm listening to this album. I usually skip Tattoo, but then let the other 12 songs blast! Song after song just kills me, and I'm thinking this album is just too good to be true. When I'm listening, I always think to myself, "Jesus Christ, this has to be one of their very best albums." But then I think, but how could it be better than the first few? So, I put it under my top three, but I sometimes think it's as good as my second tier of favorites.

In the end, I think ADKOT is a GROSSLY underrated collection of songs, that if it weren't for the drama and the negativity of the last 20 years, would be universally, almost unanimously recognized as a complete triumph, and one of THE most kick ass albums of the last 20-25 years (by anyone).

Tattoo is the second best track on the album, man~!

I know you loved it, and I did too for the first six months. But honestly, I just can't toss it in with the six pack as a comparable album. Let's face it, the production is weak. There's literally no brown sound, nor modern polishing. Some of the old demos just didn't land when reworked - Bullethead, Trouble with Never. It just doesn't fit anywhere smoothly within the lexicon, it's kinda like VH3 that way. Still love the album, but it's pretty clear it's a different animal than the first six Dave albums. A wildly different animal. A nice return to hard guitar form, yes. But...I dunno. It's hard to label it.

Stay Frosty, though....one of the best Van Halen tracks ever put to board. From any era, or any album.

    Dave era:
    1984
    VH1
    Fair Warning
    VHII
    ADKOT
    WACF
    Diver Down

The top four from the Dave era all earn consideration for the top spot at various times, depending on my mood. ADKOT isn't too far behind.

    Sam era:
    5150
    FUCK
    Balance
    OU812

A remastered OU812 might move it up the list.

Aren't you forgetting a few non album tracks? (cough) Donut City (cough) Catherine (cough) Rise (cough)

Ehh, the two live albums are worthless. I dunno how hard it woulda been for either project to work a little harder on the mixing and mastering, but it seems like they could've put more effort into both.

Live albums in general just gotta be exactly right to land properly. I can only think of a few that have done it and hit it outta the park. Budokan comes to mind. Maybe Blood Red Sky.

Actually, that last Zep album from the O2 shows was pretty fuckin' good. Celebration. Def liked the sound on that, and that was even without Bonzo.
