Very cool interview from a master player in his own right....Always dug GE Smith. Anyone know what he's been up to lately?

Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

nice interview.... love the stompin 8h jam. first heard it on AudioGalaxy around 2000-ish, didn't know about it before that

this is the only place on the net I can find the actual video footage, nowhere else seems to have it: http://v.youku.com/v_show/id_XNzU3MzE0NA==.html

not sure what the 'mistake' is? never noticed one...

I didn't watch the video interview, cuz my speakers are out, but if you're talking about the mistake in 8h? I've seen it so many times, I think I remember Eddie kinda just going off on a little jam and not coming back in at the right moment. He covers it up like a pro. Actually, now that I think about it, I might have that exactly backwards, I think he was sposed to do some soloing and maybe didn't right away. Either way, he covers it up good.

I'm just going to have to plug my speakers in.

It's at 2 05, but I question if this is the live version. It doesn't sound the same to me. But I do know it's at 2:05 that he is talking about, I'm so proud to be one of the 3 in America that noticed it!

Here is the video I watched until my tape broke

    http://www.nbc.com/saturday-night-li...an-halen/n9553

it's at about 2:24 on this one.

    That was cool. Thanks!

I always loved the G.E. years. Cuz I'm a guitar guy it was better with a guitarists leading the band. Schaffer was great, too, but those years were slightly better. G.E. did some great playing every season.

I used to jam along to this with my tobacco quilt Peavey Wolf Special EXP. It's a fun tune with some neat riffs. Obviously, it's the I Want Some Action/Dirty Water Dog/Twist the Knife motif, yet I love how Ed and the SNL band played around with the theme for this version!

The "mistake", I believe, is near the end. The band stops for a second, and Ed bends a note on the G string, followed by a high tapped note w/vibrato. It's a split second thing, but you can tell that Ed lost his train of thought for a millisecond. Then he launches into his blues boxed trademarked tapping in the high Gm position (15, 18, 20th frets) on the B & E strings.

G.E. Smith is a monster guitarist in his own right!
    Very authentic.

Lorne is a weird fella. I guess he had to get with the times so to speak.

Music got very "ethnic" after 1995. And very shitty.

I just meant that he's got a great feel, to my ears. And he can play convincingly in many different styles, with an accurate/appropriate tone. He'd almost be able to jam with anyone and hold his own.

    Pretty cool.

As a side note, I remember that Clapton performance for Five Long Years and I remember thinking it was amazing. Not sure I have seen it since. Hulu has all the episodes, so maybe I can find it on there.

Edit: Nope, there is a huge 20 year gap on Hulu. Anyway, I found this, for those interested in Smith's amp (the audio sucks though):

Plus he was in hall and Oates. Need I say more?
