Well Dirty Deeds would technically be ACDC's second release. And the Beatles if you're saying Please Please Me is their first album going by the UK releases, With The Beatles is the second. Either way those both are great second albums too.

Some others that had great debuts (not necessarily iconic) whose second albums were also great not mentioned yet...

    Ride The Lightning - Metallica
Vulgar Display Of Power - Pantera
    Paranoid - Black Sabbath
Skid Row - Slave to the Grind

There's lots of bands whose debut albums were so-so but their second albums were awesome and made them famous like Motley Crue or even the band Live, but I realize this list is for great first AND second albums.

Strange Days by The Doors comes to mind.

Far superior to the first album, imo.

    In no particular order:

    Van Halen II
    Led Zeppelin II
    Sambora - Undiscovered Soul
Skid Row - Slave to the Grind
    Bon Jovi - 7800 Fahrenheit
Ozzy - Diary of a Madman
    Extreme - Pornograffitti
    Harem Scarem - Mood Swings

**I highly recommend checking out the Mood Swings album by Harem Scarem. Van Halen meets Queen IMO. Killer chops, great guitar, amazing harmonies and songwriting...**

Dirt has always been, far and away, my favorite AIC album. Every track is terrific, except for Down In A Hole. I like it, but it's the Little Dreamer of Dirt for me, in that it is noticeably weaker and a little boring compared to the rest of the album.

Soundgarden's Badmotorfinger was an equally impressive sophomore album.

Ratt's Invasion Of Your Privacy was a great follow up to Out Of The Cellar.

And, of course, Rush certainly brought in a pretty good replacement drummer on their second album Fly By Night.

I'm in the minority, but I love VHII just a little bit more than the debut. Probably because I like Al's drumming better lol.

I've always liked Candy-O a touch bit more then the first. Love the way the songs flow together on it. How is it possible to never get tired of Let's Go? All it takes is that opening bouncy sound and I'm hooked every time.

    The critics hated the album.

And as worn out as the song Desperado is to me, the album itself is a masterpiece. I didn't even discover it until the early eighties when I was visiting my sister at college and I stole it from her.

Badmotorfinger is Soundgarden's third album not second. Louder Than Love is second. Ultramega OK is their debut and pretty average at best.

Sometimes you really need to look at the release dates on some albums. I was surprised a few times last night when I found out certain popular albums were not debuts for some bands.

A strong case could almost be made for OU812, depending on a person's point of view...
