Exclamation Matt le Blanc as new Top Gear presenter...

Matt le Blanc to join (DJ) Chris Evans as a presenter of the soon to be re-launched BBC "Top Gear".

    Not convinced...Not convinced at ALL...

Wow, a horrible actor reduced to that. Shocker.
Sammy did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it.
Michael did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it.

"Reduced"?!? "Top Gear" is fantastic (or, it WAS).

I think this new version will be disastrous - and le Blanc won't help...They're only putting him in there because he is a global 'name', not because he's remotely suited to the role.

I don't believe that this partnership will have anything remotely as appealing as Clarkson, May, and Hammond: Evans is a horrible squirt of a man and le Blanc is an American...I just can't see it working (at least not here in the UK - and it IS supposed to be a BBC production, still).

On the contrary, I think LeBlanc will be very good in this role. He does have a very desirable car collection and if you've watched him on Episodes, he's a man's man and a pretty funny guy. Now, I realize the British have a sense of humor that only the British believe is funny but I think LeBlanc 's humor, wealth and experience with dream cars will translate nicely.

No one can replace the original 3 hosts, this new version will not be even close to the original. That being said LeBlanc is a huge car guy and will do just fine. Again..... its not going to be original top gear.

I'm sure a lot of American audiences will find it / him funny, yes. I just worry that his humour will be similar to how it was in "Friends" (mildly amusing / massively OTT). I have no real inclination to see Evans and Le Blanc mangle "Top Gear" in that way - but I will be interested to see who does have the inclination (and from which parts of the world they originate)!

I'm a huge top gear fan and could not agree more. Chris Evans is laughable as a replacement for Jeremy clarkson.

I'm looking forward to the Amazon series. A non governed jezza, Capt. slow and hamster? Sign me up.

Still say the Vietnam and 2007 USA special is by far some of the funniest shit I've come across on tv.

Oh come on now, folks. History has shown that some people are replaceable, and even liked more than the original

I can't see this being any good. You can't replace the chemistry the original guys had

I like Episodes, and from what I understand it is mostly filmed in England, aired there, then aired here. He's gotten awards and nominations for his performance (as himself) in the show, and the show is really, really funny, and Matt is great. He was also great in Friends.

But have you ever seen him interviewed? He comes across as a bit of a zero. So him hosting a show versus acting a script might be two totally different things. Either way, him filming his current series in England helps make a little sense as to why he might be considered.

Precisely. He's the American equivalent of Daniel Craig - stereotypically good-looking, but dull, dull, dull (at least when unscripted).

I predict the new "Top Gear" becoming an excellent cure for insomnia.

Interestingly, "Episodes" has had very limited success over here.

It's funny. When the US tried their version (and see below for more macro context on this), they nabbed Adam Carolla to host. He's a comedian, a known car guy, good buds with Jay Leno, also a big car guy, he races, has a big car collection, owns most of Paul Newman's race cars (and races them), last year released a documentary on Paul Newman's racing career, and just finished a doc on color-barrier-breaking racer Willy T. Ribbs.

The pilot didn't get picked up, so next pilot season, Adam got a shot at a pilot for his own sitcom. While doing that, he got a call that Top Gear was getting picked up, but Carolla had to turn it down because of his own sitcom pilot. Of course, that didn't get picked up, and Top Gear US apparently just recently filmed its 5th season. They replaced him, swear to God, with a comedian with a similar name, Adam Ferrara, who as far as I know has no background in cars.

I don't think the US version has much acclaim, however. I am sorry to see LeBlanc swoop in to the British version and ruin that too.

That doesn't surprise me. The conceit of the show I think relies heavily on American pop culture knowledge. The entire overall joke is that American versions of British shows rarely live up to the original. I mean, despite the success of the Office, the 'cool crowd' will always say how much better the British version was. But beyond a few successes and good shows here and there, you have a trail of carcasses. I mean, we tried to bring Fawlty Towers here (called Payne) with John Larroquette in the Cleese role. Even the pilot episode of the Office used the same script as the first British episode (a mistake that nearly killed the series).

In real life, there was some irony that it debuted on Showtime here alongside the American version of Shameless. So here you have a show about how America takes these great British shows and destroys them being paired with an American version of a British show. Even more ironic--Shameless is pretty good and is quite successful!

Anyway, was Friends big there? Because you kind of also have to know that Matt LeBlanc is typecast as Joey, that he had a failed spinoff called Joey, and his career has basically been dead other than that. And Joey, while sweet, was not going to join Mensa.

I think you need to have all of that knowledge just for the premise of Episodes to make sense. These British writers have an esteemed show called Lyman's Boys that America is going to remake, and they hire the creators to do it. It's a show about a headmaster of a boys school, starring Julian Bullard (played by Richard Griffiths). By the time America is done with it, it's about a hockey coach, played by Matt LeBlanc, and his players--called Pucks!.

"Friends" was a HUGE hit here, yes - because, I think, it was so wonderfully American - everyone was young, good-looking, wealthy, jolly - in contrast to a good many British sitcoms.

I think the key to its success here was that it was a form of escapism, where a gloriously glamorous, colourful existence, and celebration of 'American-ness' was presented. It just made everyone who watched it happy! (Does that make sense )?
