Default Swan songs - Artists' last works...

...interesting (but I'll admit, a tad morbid) conversation among friends this weekend after David Bowie's passing that kinda has me a little fascinated now:

Which artists have released albums right before passing away, KNOWING their time was limited due to deteriorating health and one last release was, in essence, their final words?

Obviously, you have to rule out all the tragic accidents (car wrecks, plane crashes, overdoses, etc.), and you can't count any of those "newly discovered" posthumous releases and/or compilations of incomplete tracks and songs "previously unreleased".

A half-dozen of us discussed this last night, and came up with a surprisingly short list (so far):

Warren Zevon - The Wind (2003)
    David Bowie - Blackstar (2016)
Johnny Cash - American IV (2002) ...although, in this instance, you could thrown in the V and VI releases, also.

We wracked our brains last night trying to come up with other examples, but the VAST majority had to be thrown out because of the untimeliness of the artist's passing.

C'mon, though...there HAS to be other albums out there. What are they?

Man, you ain't kidding. The lyrics to "The Show Must Go On" are gut wrenching. I remember when we popped it into the store cd player thinking "Uh-Oh" when that song came on. Some of the industry guys that would come in told us that he was sick but they didn't know much.

    "The Show Must Go On"

Empty spaces - what are we living for
Abandoned places - I guess we know the score
On and on, does anybody know what we are looking for...
    Another hero, another mindless crime
Behind the curtain, in the pantomime
Hold the line, does anybody want to take it anymore

    The show must go on,
    The show must go on

    Inside my heart is breaking
    My make-up may be flaking
But my smile still stays on.

Whatever happens, I'll leave it all to chance
    Another heartache, another failed romance
On and on, does anybody know what we are living for?
I guess I'm learning, I must be warmer now
I'll soon be turning, round the corner now
    Outside the dawn is breaking
But inside in the dark I'm aching to be free

    The show must go on
    The show must go on

    Inside my heart is breaking
    My make-up may be flaking
But my smile still stays on

My soul is painted like the wings of butterflies
Fairytales of yesterday will grow but never die
I can fly - my friends

    The show must go on
    The show must go on

I'll face it with a grin
    I'm never giving in
On - with the show -
I'll top the bill, I'll overkill
I have to find the will to carry on
    On with the -
    On with the show -

    The show must go on...

    Damn.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

As soon as I saw the title to this thread, The Show Must Go On came to mind. It epitomises acknowledging the end is near. You can hear it in Freddie's voice. To this day, I still get chills listening to it.

The term flame away is probably more accurate that you might've meant at first!!?? LOL.

I'm a Queen fan. Not a die hard, but still a fan. I loved the music they did for the Highlander movie as well.

    Wow.

Here's a video synced to the "Live Killers" album.

Same here. I can cobble together a decent 10 song album from their entire discography but by and large I just don't like them or Mercury. That quintessential' Queen sound' - though idiosyncratic and instantly identifiable - just irks me. Especially their harmonies. Also can't stand Brian May's guitar tone - heresy, I know. (Cue the regular overt flamers). I thought Mercury was a good singer and frontman but not the demigod he's revered as.

However, each to their own and I don't begrudge anyone who loves them. As should those who disagree with my opinion.

Great singer and a great band, but not my cup of tea. Respect them, but I don't own a single album by them.

Have you ever noticed the musical similarities between Queen and Sweet?

"If at first you don't succeed, then skydiving is not for you"

After googling today, it was only around 9 months.

    Good call, Raldo.

You summed up my exact feelings.

There's another fantasy thread about ideal band and he's in a lot of people's list. I get it. That voice but as DD said, I've never owned a single album and their sound, although instantly identifiable, has never touched me, in any way.

He's also SO revered. I repeat, his voice and showmanship were top shelf BUT is it because he died young as well? Isn't there some of that going on here?
