    Default Powerball reaches 1.3 billion

No winner of record Powerball jackpot, next draw put at $1.3 billion

    By Alex Dobuzinskis

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - No one won Saturday's record jackpot of nearly $950 million in the multi-state Powerball lottery, officials said, driving the haul for a winning ticket in the next draw to $1.3 billion, lottery officials said.

Millions of Americans anxiously checked their tickets for the winning combination of six numbers - 32, 16, 19, 57, 34 with a Powerball number of 13.

The grand prize for Powerball has climbed steadily for weeks after repeated drawings produced no big winners. This week ticket purchases surged along with the size of the pot, driving the prize beyond the $900 million reported earlier.

The grand prize in Saturday's drawing was worth $558 million for a winner choosing an immediate cash payout instead of annual payments over 29 years, according to lottery officials in California, one of the participating states.

The prize, which rises with every drawing in which the winning series of six numbers is not won, ranked as the largest jackpot for any lottery in North American history. With almost unimaginable riches at stake, many Americans who normally shun lotteries joined the long lines of people buying tickets at retail stores across the country.

Dony Elias, 26, an attendant at Stardust Liquor in Los Angeles, said 300 customers picked up tickets for Powerball on Friday night at his store. Elias admitted to buying a ticket for himself, something he said he had never done before.

And like many other players, he had given some thought to what he would do with the cash - "I would take a trip to the moon."

California normally sees Powerball sales of $1 million a day, but on Saturday morning sales were $2.8 million an hour, said California Lottery spokesman Mike Bond.

Excitement swirled among ticket buyers despite what some statisticians call mind-boggling odds for the Powerball game, one in 292 million.

Jeffrey Miecznikowski, associate professor of biostatistics at the University at Buffalo, said in an email an American is roughly 25 times more likely to become the next president of the United States than to win at Powerball.

Or to put it another way, the odds are equivalent to flipping a coin 28 times and getting heads every time.

"It doesn't sound so bad ... but you would be at it for an eternity," Miecznikowski said.

November was the last time a jackpot winner emerged from Powerball, which is run by the Multi-State Lottery Association.

In the drawing on Wednesday night, the jackpot stood at $500 million and with no winner drawn, the stage was set for Saturday night's drawing just before 11 p.m. Eastern time.

The previous record North American jackpot payout for any lottery game was in March 2012, when $656 million was won in the multi-state Mega Millions draw.

I told CC to get one. However, it seems you can't buy a lottery ticket in Nevada...Anyone else find it ironic that in the biggest gambling state in the world, you can't buy a lottery ticket? I understand that the casinos wield a lot of power but surely they must understand that those people who want to purchase the occasional lottery ticket are not necessarily going to be the same as those who frequent casinos?

Anyway, yes, since our UK lottery was bought out by a Canadian company, they've doubled the price of a ticket, and added another ten numbers, almost doubling the odds of winning from 1/25m to 1/45m. Needless to say, they're now finding that people just aren't buying them and are moving over to other, alternative lotteries or just stopping altogether and saving their money. Quite right too - it's all a big swizz.

I'll buy a ticket, but I am not sure I would want to win it. That's so much money it makes your family a target, and they make lottery winners public here in Virginia.

    I'd settle for $5 Million...

Some of the lotteries here in Canada have, say a $20 Million grand prize, and up to 15 other chances to win a million. I like those break downs better than one person (usually in their 70's! lol) winning a huge jackpot. It gives more people a "chance" to join the club.

Ten would be good, as you are paying almost half in taxes here.

    39.6 - top federal
    5.75 - my Virginia rate
    2.9 - PPACA tax

Hell, I would be happy as pie with 100 grand, that would fix a lot of problems.

Shit. They have to find my family first. My mom is a judge. She already gets a protective detail.

You find a $100 bill here and it is technically income.

    It really is stupid.

Our politicians insist that lotto generated funds wouldn't be worth the hassle. They insist that education and services wouldn't benefit. The gaming indistry still rules. The other big excuse is "concern for the poor" spending all their money on tickets, as opposed to spending it in the casinos on nickel & penny poker machines. Okaaaay.

There have been petitions for our state to join Powerball and Mega Millions after every humongous jackpot, to no avail. I suspect this time...they'll have to seriously consider it. They're losing so much revenue.

I prefer that as well. I wouldn't want to win a lot of money if your name was made public. Thus is why I don't buy lottery tickets I guess.

What company bound them? Here the lotteries are run by government agencies.

Our government sucks balls in this regard.

They just can't let us be lucky or fortunate without having their hand in it. Imo, income is strictly wages earned from working.

This is why the IRS is so despised.

Taxing lottery winnings up here is silly since the government runs them and a chunk of the money is going to charities, disease research, etc. The ticket buyers just get what's left. Also explains why we don't get billion dollar jackpots I guess. I honestly can't remember the last time I bought a ticket.

Even if our government ran them, they'd still tax the winnings. I'm sure of it.
