Default PS6 Harmonist or OC3 Octave???

I'm looking to get some Van Hagar tone from 5150-OU812 and after reading many posts on this I'm still confused as to which pedal/effect I should use. I have the Boss PS6 (Harmonist) but reading another post someone mentioned I needed a dtune effect like the Boss OC3 (Octave).

So instead of confusing myself even more I figured I'd ask this board .

    Please somebody help me...lol.

My goal is to play Best of Both Worlds, 5150, Cabo, and maybe something off of F.U.C.K for an upcoming gig for a friend who is requesting VH songs in our set list. I normally just play with a hint of reverb and a short delay where needed since we play a lot of different styles but VH poses a new problem on the Van Hagar tunes.

I don't have an Octave (as it's not used heavily by VH or anyone I listen to) but am using the detuner in the Harmonist to simulate the "chorusy" Hagar-era sound.

Check out the last couple of pages from the "Getting a Van Hagar Sound out of a 5150II/6505+" thread in the Guitar Room forum....

Thanks to the both of you....detuner in the Harmonist it is. I thought it was that to begin with but sometimes I tend to overthink things .

PS6 Harmonist has a dtune effect, as well as its predecessor the PS5 Super Shifter. Eddie does use that exact octave pedal on stage now, but he doesn't use it that often. The PS5 and PS6 do give you that chorus-y effect that Eddie has on the Hagar albums.

Ha I use a 1985 (yup!) Rockman Chorus/Delay (only chorus) and an old Boss DD-3 to get my 80s sounds into my Jan. 1991 5150. I find the harmonists or shifter stuff works better for the later like 91-96 sound, it gives the guitar this great stereo chorus like effect but it really only works the best with 2 or 3 cabinets of course.
