In the plane on my way back from Scotland I watched the 1972 movie, 'The Godfather.' Most Americans have watched that film, but let me take you back to its first scene and connect it to the weekly murders of unarmed Black men by white cops.
Don Corleone (Marlon Brando) is in his study granting favors, because it's a Sicilian tradition that a man can't refuse a request on his daughter's wedding day.
Head bowed, the undertaker Bonasera told his story to the Don. His beautiful daughter dated a non-Italian, and one night he and his friend tried to take advantage of her.
'She resisted, so they beat her, like an animal. When I went to the hospital her nose was broken, her jaw was shattered, held together by wire.she was the light of my life—beautiful girl. Now she will never be beautiful again.
Bonasera, an Italian in the 1940′s, made the mistake of going through the American justice system. The two boys were brought to trial and received a three-year suspended sentence. They went free immediately, and they laughed at him as they left the courtroom. He decided to go to the Don for help, and he whispered into his ear. It's assumed he asked to have the young men killed. He asked for justice, but the Don said his daughter was still alive.
'Then they can suffer, as she suffers,' Bonasera said.
Don Corleone scolded Bonasera. 'Why did you go to the police?' he asked. 'Why didn't you come to me first? Had you come to me in friendship, then this scum that ruined your daughter would be suffering this very day. And that by chance if an honest man such as yourself should make enemies, then they would become my enemies. And then they would fear you.'
The Don agreed to take care of the matter. According to Mario Puzo's novel, the two young men ended up in the hospital for six weeks.
Black people need a Godfather. They will NEVER get justice from the justice system. The police, the prosecutors, the courts, and the judges are all in bed together. They work together, they cover for each other, they withhold evidence, they obstruct and delay, and when there is video evidence they tell the public not to believe what they're seeing with their very own eyes.
Don Corleone's line, 'they would fear you' doesn't apply to Black folks. The police are not afraid. They murder with impunity. They shoot first and make up a story later. And white folks, even liberal white folks, give them the benefit of the doubt. Maybe the unarmed victim did go for the cop's gun. Maybe the cop was really in fear for his life from an unarmed Black kid or a 12-year-old with a toy gun.
And what about black on black crime? How allegedly intelligent people can justify the murder of black men by white cops because black people commit crimes against other black people is absolutely mind-boggling.
Well, the black kid was a punk, they say. Oh, if only his family wasn't so dysfunctional, if only he hadn't talked back to the cop.
It's not limited to Republicans. The prosecutor in Cleveland that declined to prosecute the cops who killed Tamir Rice was a Democrat seeking re-election. Chicago Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who covered up the murder of Laquan McDonald, is a Democrat who was seeking re-election, and he was aided by the prosecutor, a Latina Democrat.
Black people need to stop making fruitless protest marches and carrying signs. They should forget about vigils and forgiveness and stop confronting cops who are wearing body armor and armed with tanks and automatic weapons. They shouldn't burn down businesses in the black neighborhood, and they should stop shooting each other over drug deals gone bad.
If they're going to shoot and burn, they should direct their fire(s) elsewhere.
What would whitey do? Black people aren't violent enough, and they're not nearly as vindictive as whites.
What would Italians do if their unarmed sons were gunned down by police? This question was asked to a bunch of baby-boomer Italians in a coffee shop recently. They looked at each other and laughed, then shook their heads. No words were necessary. The message was clear.
What would the Irish do if their sons were killed by British soldiers? If you had traveled in Ireland back in the 1970's and 1980's you'd have heard the bombs set off by the Irish Republican Army (IRA). One year they blew up the British ambassador, and there were bombs going off in Dublin and Galway all during that period.
What of our sainted Founding Fathers? Would they have stood by and watched their sons murdered by English soldiers, or would they have used the guerilla warfare tactics they learned from Native Americans, sniping and killing those soldiers while hiding behind trees or on rooftops?
If Black people want justice they have to make the police, the prosecutors, and the politicians fear them. They need to make wealthy and influential white people afraid and hope that group demands justice for them as a means of self-preservation. They have to understand that white people, regardless of their political affiliation, don't believe that Black Lives Matter. If they did, things would not be the way they are.
If Black people continue on the path they're following, these cop murders will continue week after week after week, with no end in sight.
Let me close with this comment from a New York Times reader regarding the Tamir Rice decision:
“I keep thinking what Malcolm X would have said and done were he alive today.”
No doubt he would have said and done what whitey would have said and done—no more, no less."Watch what people are cynical about, and one can often discover what they lack.” -- Gen. George S. Patton
