I'm not sure if the same person is the subject matter, yet I recall reading that Randy Bachman got a tearful call from EVH in the early 90's?
They were on tour together, and a friend of Ed's had committed suicide. Anyway, Ed came to Randy's room to vent and jam... Randy said it was some of the most beautiful and intense guitar playing he'd ever heard!

You are correct, RR. Ed was moved to write "Crossing Over" after a close friend's suicide.

But the story I remember is that it was originally written as far back as '83 or '84. I remember a comment Ed made about keeping HIS lyrics panned hard L or R on a separate track after Sam sang on it to give it that eerie, out-of-phase feel to the song.

I know I have an old INSIDE or something from back in the day that addresses the song's inception. Gimme a day or two and I will try to find it.

I thought Sam had said it was about Kurt Cobain.

Awesome song anyhow. I've lost some hearing playing it near full volume in the car. It seems that if you play the CD in the car, sound bounces off the right, left, front and rear speakers. I don't know if that's even possible, but damn it sure sounds like it.

Don't Tell Me (What Love Can Do) was the song that was supposedly written about Kurt Cobain after his "suicide" ...

I think it was sam who had someone die.

or it could be about sam talking/ singing about death and crossing over..... Ed Leffler.

EVH initially wrote and demo'd it in 1983.

According to this page reprint from the book " Uncle Joe's Record Guide " it was originally titled " David's Tune ". ( I'm assuming if this page is correct that was his friends name which the song was about). (Obviously not about DLR. )

    http://unclejoe.com/recGuide/vanhalen.html

B-1: "Crossing Over" began as a demo titled "David's Tune" that Eddie wrote and recorded in 1983 for a friend who had committed suicide. Upon joining the band and hearing the demo, Sammy wanted to finish the song, but Ed declined. Years later, following the death of Ed Leffler and Sammy's father in 1993, Sammy wrote lyrics to further explore the theme of crossing over from one life into the next. Eddie finally gave his OK, and "Crossing Over" was finished. Still, some of the band felt the song was too personal, so it was kept off the album and appeared destined to become the only finished Van Halen outtake ever. Instead, the group was convinced to use the song as Van Halen's first-ever, non-album B-side - first on the Japanese single release of "Don't Tell Me (What Love Can Do)," and later as the B-side of the worldwide release of "Can't Stop Loving You."

Well- Hmmmnnn.....I Googled Randy Bachman Eddie Van Halen into the keywords and one of the results was his Vinyl Tap Stories book which mentions that Ed told him about a high school friend who committed suicide and then he played acoustic for Randy over two hours in his hotel suite on the 1986 Tour. ( When BTO opened up)

So- That contradicts the other timeline. (???)

Normally I like finding out Trivia like this but it's not uncommon to run across inconsistent discrepancies amongst different write ups.

I'll go back and double-check my collection, but I do remember the '83 timeline version of the story. And I know I've heard THAT version of the story from multiple sources.

Somewhere in my collection is an article where Sammy talks all about Crossing Over and how he cried because of the song. If I can find it and scan it, I'll share it with you. FINDING it is the problem! Lol. 30 years of Van Halen collection in my garage! Hahahaha
