Default The truth about US high schools

My knowledge of US high school comes from films but as they all portray similar characters and themes I wonder if they're less fiction and more a reflection on reality so here I am asking whether that is the case or not.

    • Rich students driving flashy sports cars - even in standard schools
    • Cliques that rigidly keep to their own - rich, stoners, metal heads, jocks, nerds, hot girls
    • Jocks always macho meatheads
    • Sports coaches always hardline and equally macho - less like a teacher and more like a friend/drill sargeant (swearing, threatening, banter etc)
    • Students needing passes to walk the halls outside of class.
    • Absence of more than a few days in a year is a serious issue
    • Taking extra-curricular/lunchtime activities really seriously

    Cliques, definitely.

The jocks and stoners always got along because the jocks needed weed.

I've always wanted to know what's truth and what's fiction regarding high schools in the USA - especially as I was considering moving over there to teach at one point...

The fact that they don't wear school uniform over there always perplexes me - and, I am sure, must contribute to the existence of cliques?

I agree to the Nth degree.

I can't understand WHY we're so GODDAMN stubborn on that issue.

Here comes the "freedom of expression" and "they want us to be robots" crowd.

What blofeld mentioned was definitely true at my schools.

First off, everyone's experience is going to be different. I went to a moderately strict private Catholic high school and my experiences there were vastly different from everyone I know who went to a public school. Although I think it's safe to say that the way high school is portrayed in film isn't a universal standard. But here's my own experience based on your bullet points:

    - Since I went to a school with paid tuition, there were a lot of rich families in the school. Less sports cars but more like BMW and Audi sedans, since sports cars are pretty impractical in the winter up here. Still, most of the students (like me) came from middle-class families and the vast majority of them drove bland, common, hand-me downs. A lot of parents are willing to make sacrifices to afford sending their kids to this school because it had such a good reputation, so not everyone is "rich."

    - I guess there were cliques, but the "groups" weren't nearly as separate as the movies make them out to be. There was a lot of intermingling and people who could be considered to be parts of multiple cliques. I knew rich stoners and I was a nerdy metal head (still am).

    - Not all the jocks were what I'd call "meatheads." At this school you had to keep a certain GPA or else you'd be dismissed and you could never come back, so idiots never stuck around long. Some of them were kind of full of themselves, but others were really good people, and a lot of them had the best senses of humor. Our starting quarterback was probably one of the nicest people I've ever met. He pretty much tried get to know everyone and pretty much the epitome of "sociable."

    - Coaches were really more like teachers, honestly, especially the ones who were teachers themselves (and usually they were better at the teaching thing).

    - We didn't have "passes." They were strict at keeping attendance, so if you didn't show up to a class you were in big trouble. If the teacher needed to send you on an errand, they just sent you. No pass or anything. If you needed to use the restroom you just asked permission.

    - Yes, they were sticklers about this. But if you woke up sick, you could have one of your parents call the school, and then write you a note and turn it into the attendance office the next day, and they'd usually excuse it. But not showing up without any reason? Yeah, they didn't like that at all.

    - Extra-curricular and lunchtime activities are pretty much the only times we got to goof off, so that was the opposite of serious.

    Can't forget "narcs".

These were older people who walked around with walkie talkies, spying on everybody.

Now days they're actual law enforcement.

We wore uniforms and cliques still existed. But uniforms help remove many issues that come with kids dressing how they want.

It also instills a sense of discipline. Adults have to wear "uniforms" for work. Why not kids? For the life of me, I can't understand why not.

I would have been cool with it, when I was in school.

    It does.

The reason more schools don't move to uniform is because getting parents agree to any change is near impossible. My kids elementary school is uniform and we love it. Removes much stress from every morning. The only question is blue or white shirt.

That makes zero sense to me...Having the kids in uniform saves a LOT of money and stress! It's relatively inexpensive, and it saves them using their decent, going-out clobber for school - plus it means there's far less pressure on 'keeping up with trends' and 'looking good'.

There's none of that, "Oh nooo - what shall I wear today?" malarkey in the mornings, either!

Americans are an inherently stubborn people.

School uniforms instill a sense of pride as well. Pride of school.

Answer me this: why do sports teams wear uniforms? NBA players can't wear their own shorts...their own tops...etc

    It's unity. It's cohesion....
