I would kill to hear the original mastertape recordings of ADKOT.

I mostly agree, that's just the reality of it, but at the same time that's almost always been the case with rock/pop crowds. They simply know the stuff that's been out longer and respond to it. Nobody really goes to a rock concert to pay attention to anything new, they just turn their brain off and respond to what they know. But the whole idea used to be to tour to promote the album, in other words, to highlight the new songs in spite of the fact that they're less well known. A band has to do that with confidence. When I saw Van Halen in 1991 I certainly don't think the majority of the crowd was there then to hear the entire FUCK album played, and the previous hits certainly got more response as always, but that didn't deter them from playing the whole new album.

The "play the old stuff" crowd has always been there, it's mostly the product of laziness, people just want what they know. When I started seeing these same kinds of rock bands even back in the 80s the new songs always got less of a reaction and it was common to hear people in the crowd yelling "play the old stuff!" etc. Hell, I have an audience Rush bootleg from 1978 where a guy near the taper is yelling "play the old stuff!" over and over during Hemispheres, lol! There were probably a lot of fans on the VH II tour who just wanted to hear the first album. That resistance has always been there once a band becomes popular, at that point the existing catalog is canonized by fans and anything after is just not as welcome. But lots of older bands even these days will still play a lot of new music, certainly far more than VH did with ADKOT. I just don't think the album was any kind of passionate project for Eddie and he just took the easier path. I think it's more reflective of the fact that VH thinks of themselves as a nostalgia act at this point.

We'll see what happens. I'm a casual Aerosmith fan. I have never seen them live, but I think ST has an awesome voice and it has held up. I didn't know their live shows have taken a hit attendance wise. They had a new album in 2012 as well and it sold like shit. 200k in the US or less. That's half of ADKOT. These guys just need to realize that their Platinum days are over. It sucks, but it's the new reality.

HaHa ha thx for the laugh! A second track has just been released - go figure on the same day everyone talking about GNR...may be milking it. I suspect he will buy his own copies. Possibly even more dreadful than the first. KInda like Taylor Swift meets Bieber! It's fast so don't know how he'd pull that off live and what about him always having back up vocals on his voice live. How will he accomplish that with this new crap? The thing is if he was doing this without stringing along the bad boys of Boston that would be one thing, but I know he loves to see them squirm so rather sadistic in its totality!

You know, I honestly think some of the new songs are just as good, but it comes down to your first reply, and that is that they are now a nostalgia act (as much as that pains me to say as a life long fan), and people only wanna hear the hits that they remember form when they were younger and VH was was their personal soundtrack from that time.
    .
Sure there's us lifers who would love to hear the new stuff too, but really, even years back when they weren't considered nostalgia, and still selling out and top of their game, I admit to really wanting to hear earlier stuff, and frankly over what they had just released. Like when FUCK came out and I saw the concert, I was chomping at the bit to hear 5150, Summer Nights, and Source, over some of the stuff on the new album just because I really loved listening to that stuff for years. It kind of became classic stuff to me because of the mamories of the time associated with it.
    It's weird.
Time really changes your perception, and it's not just VH. There are artists who still pump decent stuff out, maybe totally on par to their earlier work, but the "classics" will always be at the forefront of people's minds regardless how good the new stuff is.

It's almost been 4 years since ADKOT. Between February 1978 and April 1982, Van Halen released VH, VH II, WACF, FW and DD.

At this point in time, none of the new VH tracks are going to be considered classics. Unless we pull III out of our closets like Edward suggested back in the day! Haha.
Point is, their songs of the past have a STRONG appeal and fan base, regardless of any Sam or Dave bias. We grew up with that stuff. It's not only hard to compete with themselves over that - it's impossible to compete with that. In my opinion.

My advise to them would be to do what they've been doing lately. I'm not talking about the lead singer status or role. I'm referring to the business model.
Release a new album for the fans who want to hear it, play a couple of select tunes from it in concert, yet focus largely on their glorious past. The tour will help generate sales of the latest disc, yet the concert goers will mostly be happy. That's where the real money is made.

Yep. All the money these days is in touring and merchandising. There simply isn't any financial incentive to record new music, unless your name is Adele Adkins or Taylor Swift.

Or, a band of Van Halen's caliber can self record an album, release via iTunes, and barely spend a nickel, and probably sell a few hundred thousand copies, and bank a pretty nice penny for themselves.

The old model doesn't work anymore, but they are too set in their ways to adjust.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

But that's what I'm saying - I WANT VH to keep making music! I'd love a new cd for the collection, and let's be honest, I'd love another 4 cds! LOL.

VH are a concert draw (regardless of the two main frontmen) and darned close to a sure thing when it comes to the crowds. Not every venue will be filled to capacity, but who cares? It's still a party. Release the records guys, the die hards will buy them. Then, we'll line your pockets on gig night in our respective towns.

You replied before I finished my last post.

I don't care what "model" VH use to put out a new album - as long as they put out a new album. Or several more.
Just saying that it's okay to not overload the live setlist with new tunes, because by and large, that's not what the ticketholders want. It's perfectly okay by me.

Let me spin a new disc in my home, see a couple of those tracks live, and then see the ones I've coveted for all these decades.... Perfect!

What I was initially suggesting was more of a mix-it-up. Like on the past tour, with the amount of Truth songs they're already playing, play different ones from time to time. Keep STW as a staple, but throw in SF, AI, YAYB or even BW or OS on occasion. If they're only playing 2, why not?

I do think on the '12-'13 tour, 5 should've been the number, though. Not 4. But the '15 tour, change them up. The majority of the crowd not caring is irrelevant.

With that being said, I'd love to hear BAF again. I was lucky enough to see it at one of the shows I went to. And he sounded fuckin' fine. Better than he did on CT.

On a side note about setlists--was listening to a boot today from last year's tour and it got me thinking. Since the '07 reunion tour, for a great and hugely popular song that was neglected (outside of some nods to it in Eddie's '88 and '04 solos sometimes) since Dave left the band, "Hot for Teacher" was never showcased properly within the setlist. That was the song I was most looking forward to that year. Should've been one of the encores or first couple songs, not mixed in the middle. And on the following tours it's been the same thing. Can almost say the same for EWS.

With that said, I still can't believe BG and ATCWR were only played on the tours that corresponded with their albums in the old days. And they're great live songs too which makes it even weirder that they only played them one tour each.
