Just to see Eddie play live again would be a thrill for me. If he and Sammy were on together, even better.

Funny how that goofy bastard supposedly "doesn't know anything", but as soon as a question like this comes up he has more than enough proof to shoot it down. Stop feeding us your little mushroom line Brad because apparently you are eating those somabitches.

Why does Eddie Van Halen continue to stay away from playing music ?

Something like this would be a great opportunity for him to play, and not be pressured to release some new music, tour, etc. It would give us fans something to hold us over for a while.

This article didn't indicate as much:

Review: 'Volunteers' concert a rock 'n' roll revival
    10/22/2001

By MATT WEITZ / Special Contributor to The Dallas Morning News

Big-city boosters who measure hipness by star power might've assigned Dallas a drubbing this weekend.

After all, this Saturday and Sunday saw a slew of benefit concerts for the victims of September 11: Michael Jackson and Bruce Springsteen in Washington, D.C., and David Bowie and Elton John in New York City. Dallas had to make do with "Volunteers for America," a lineup of '70s and '80s survivors such as REO Speedwagon, Journey, and Styx.

Respectable (re)incarnations, to be sure, but most of them had already been to town this summer and hardly packed the sizzle of, say, 'N Sync or Destiny's Child.

That didn't seem to matter to the approximately 15,000 "Volunteers" who flocked to Smirnoff Music Centre for an evening of meat 'n' tater rock 'n' roll that was closer to their hearts than that made by a knighted Englishman or the increasingly freakish (and irrelevant) Mr. Jackson.

The sponsors made it easy to overlook any shortcomings. All the show's proceeds will go to the Red Cross, and bands weren't even selling their own merchandise just "Volunteer" T-shirts whose sales benefit the same cause.

The audience responded in kind, cheering boisterously and enduring with good humor the concert congestion (made extra grueling by the last day of the adjacent State Fair) and frequent set changes. The atmosphere was that of a Sunday in the park, with perhaps a bit more beer and a few more overt references to nuclear annihilation (depending on where you grew up).

Host Drew Carey has an avuncular heft that made him the perfect emcee, his everyguy vibe meshing well with the crowd.

Musically, things started out with an all-star band with a rotating leadership that featured a few songs each by artists such as Eddie Money and John Waite. Although this kind of staging can often miss the tunes aren't cohesive enough to satisfy fans and certainly not presented with the right sentiment for parody the "Volunteer" aggregation did a good job with tunes such as Mr. Money's "Shakin'." The featured acts were unanimous in turning in faithful, yet engaging, versions of the soundtracks to people's memories.

One of the most pleasant surprises of the evening was Kansas' set, which was much improved from their appearance earlier this summer. Mr. Carey joined them onstage for "Carry On My Wayward Son," and their rendition of "Dust in the Wind" has never sounded so poignant or haunting.
