    Default Work Out Option Poll

Just wondering what you would do for working out with these four options...

    1) Go to gym - pay $30 month
    2) Use bike and elliptical at home with free weights - $Free
    3) Do video at home (P90X, Insanity, Rushfit, etc.) - $Free
    4) Combo of 2 and 3 - $Free

    Combo 2 & 3.

Why pay monthly when you can exercise in the comfort of your own home?

The gym is just a place to be "seen" and socialize, imo. I never had great workouts in a gym.

There is more variety at a gym, that is why I like it. But most people don't use their gym memberships, so then they become a waste of money.

I have a treadmill and free weights at home, but I like going to gym. And there is always some eye candy at the gym that can make it worthwhile.

    Especially in the summer.

I work out pretty damn hard (I was almost a competitive bodybuilder years ago), I go to a rec center by my house, they don't have a ton of equipment but I make it work. I have really never talked to anyone there and I've been going for 10 years now. I just put on my headphones, blast the music and lift heavy ass weights.

I do cardio at home and at work (we have a "fitness center" at work with an elliptical, treadmill etc) but when I lift I lift pretty heavy and I don't think I could do that at home.

I know what I do isn't the norm

most people honestly just don't know what the hell they are doing at the gym. I do kind of watch what some people do from time to time and I'm constantly baffled (and no, I'm not claiming I know everything)

guys gyms are stinky, noisy (I hate those guys who yell when they are lifting and then bang down the weights) and teaming with bacteria

go to the gym if you want to get on a piece of equipment last used by a hairy sweaty unbathed dude wearing shorts that have been at the bottom of his locker for a month

but a case of MRSA is probably worth a 10 to 15 pound weight loss at least

stay home and pop a sweating to the oldies tape in the VCR

99% of the time you won't hear a guy yelling or dropping heavy weights when they train. Nobody likes that and most gyms don't encourage it. I've worked out at some hole in the wall places and it was never encouraged.

most commercial gyms (powerhouse, worlds, etc) have spray bottles you can use to clean the equipment too.

maybe it was like what you describe in the 70's or 80's but it's not like that at all now, not even at the real hardcore gyms.

I prefer a gym and a regular workout partner. I worked out like a beast in my late mid to late 20s. My workout partner & I each had areas where we pushed the other more. I'd kill him on chest & legs and he'd return the favor on arms & shoulders. Having a regular schedule & partner to drive you really helps IMO.

Now it's all aerobic activity at home in the form of either stationary bike or real bike depending on weather.

Go to the gym. You're paying for it - so you'll be more inclined to use it. Further, it's a lot harder to 'slack off' if you've packed your gym bag and are enroute, versus being at home, watching TV then deciding 'nah, I'll do it later'

Also, the gym (as mentioned above) has more variety; variety is key to building strength, if you do the same routine over and over, you'll get diminishing returns.

Lastly, a (small) argument could be made that showering at the gym 4-5 times a week (if you go in the AM before work) will save a small amount of money on your water / heating bill.
Winners come and go; legends are forever.

I've had pretty much every piece of gym equipment over the last thirty years, and at some point they all became expensive coat racks. Plus, as was mentioned, all the distractions that can come up.

Home I say. Gym time used to rule for a bit, but I'm not 25 or so anymore. But I still stick to push ups and dips at the casa. And I try not to catch that fat disease that seems to burden people. Like eating too god damn much. Out.

For years I went the gym and lifted weights alone. About a 18 months ago I discovered kickboxing. It's fun in a group setting. I have met lots of great people. I've lost a solid 12 pounds which I have kept off for about a year. And you get to beat the crap out of a punching bag. I recommend trying it. I go to Title Kickboxing club.
Better use it up before it gets old!
