    Default Dhull515's first Frankie Build

I decided I wanted to finally try my hand at making a Frankie replica this summer. I asked for the body for Christmas from my wife and so I have had it and haven't been able to work or start on it until now. I finally talked my wife into letting me fill the grain early. The first two photo are after 2 applications. I used Stew Mac Color Tone waterbased filler. As it seems to always be, it felt amazingly smooth but once black goes on that all seems to change. I then took it down a bit to even it out and re sprayed black. I used Duplicolor Universal Black. It helped a little bit and I am happy with that. I got the body from Christopher Locke. Awesome quality! Highly recommended.

Here it is after I took the first black layer down to level it out and then where it is currently. I am still trying to figure out the stripe placement. Some are off and will be corrected. If anybody sees something that needs adjusted, please let me know.

    Congrats on tackling the project!
Looks good so far. Good luck with it, and looking forward to seeing it unfold.

    Thanks!

I have everything bought except the neck (still saving money) and the humbucker. I am undecided on which HB I want. All of the other parts are at home and aged for the most part. There are a few stripes on it I need to adjust and then I will either mask for some wear to save time on relicing or do all the wear post white.

Awesome! I love watching these come together. Having just done one last year, I can give you my two cents.

For the wear, you have two options and both have their advantages and disadvantages:

    1) Tape off the wear marks so you'll have black in the right spots. Advantage: the shape will be exactly how you want it. It will also be the right shade of black. It's very difficult to use tools and get the exact wear pattern and get an even color tone down to the black. Disadvantage: The marks can seem too perfect and might look artificial up close. It's time consuming to cut the little pieces of tape.

    2) Wear it down exactly like Eddie (only using less time and more tools). Advantage: It will look realistically worn on close inspection if you use the right techniques. Disadvantage: It's extremely time consuming and you can mess up very easily causing the need for countless touch ups if you want it to be exact. Getting the exact shapes and uniform wear can also be difficult--probably near impossible--to achieve.
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.

Ok, so after many hours tweaking the white tape, I felt good about them. I sprayed Duplicolor Wimbledon white last night. I decided to premask some wear to make it easier.

The mini Frank in those photos was somewhat of a test I did this summer. I made 2 of them. One for a friend. His was more accurate. I even made the pickguard and it had foil backing lol. I did it as a way to see where and how the stripes went from front to back.

Is that a Floyd Rose Special bridge?
Looks like it, but then the fine tuners look like they're from another unit, almost. Maybe it's just the lighting in the picture?

It is a special. My sister bought it for me for Christmas. I bought replacement FR brass fine tuning screws since the US Festival version had them. I'm sure in the future I will upgrade it to a vintage 80's FR.

I thought at first that it was that 1984 reissue bridge. It looks good!
I'd keep it, because they aren't nearly as common. Thanks for the reply.

No problem! If I can't find a vintage FR for a decent price, I will probably go with one of the reissues. But for now, the special will do well and look the part.

I figure while i wait for the paint to cure I could post about the part I am using.

-Paint: Duplicolor Universal Black, Wimbledon White and Super Red II

-The body was made by Christopher Locke
-Floyd Rose Special with replacement brass fine tuners
-Black Floyd Rose mounting screw type posts
-37mm Brass block for the FR
-Set of correct reflectors from Scott Bawden
    -Dunlop Strap Lock buttons
    -Schaller strap lock buttons
-#8 Eye Bolts (I know #6 is what most use but they seemed smaller in 82/83.
-Neck will be a Musikraft Beak with Medium Stainless frets, birdseye maple. Truoil finish
    -Schaller M6 Mini Tuners
    -Non-working phenolic pickup from Ebay
-Vintage 70's 5 way CLR switch
    -61071 stamped neck plate
    -10mm flatback red rhinestone
    -Fender input jackplate assembly
-Precut pickguard with tone knob and 500k pot from Ebay
    -1971 Quarter!

For the humbucker I still don't know what I want. It is between a Duncan '78 or a Duncan IM1. It seems the IM1 is more for how the Frankie sounds now but there isn't much online for demos and such. I will probably go with the 78 since it seems to be loved by many. I'm new to all of this and I didn't want to get an EVH Fraank pickup and have to swap plates out. So with the Duncan custom shop I can have it come with long legs.

Here is a photo of some of the parts in place before paint. The only things I need to order is the neck and humbucker. Also does anybody know what Ed's pick tape strip actually is?

Most likely stage gaffe tape rolled in on itself length wise. It has that off-white color to the bottom and remains sticky over long periods of time, even when exposed. I used a hell of a lot of it during the ~4 years I worked in production, and that is what I used on my Frankie replica. Worked like a charm.
