Default Van Halen and Styx early 1980's

Is it true that in the period of the early 1980's that Styx was way bigger than Van Halen? I was a big VH fan and one of my friends said Styx outsold VH in record sales and tours until around 1983 or 1984 or so maybe even later, is this true? Van Halen's first album didn't come out until 1986.

Styx was very popular in the late 1970's and early 1980's, but I don't think they outsold or outdrew Van Halen after maybe Van Halen II.

Well, in his defense, this album just kind of came and went without much fanfare ...

Default Van Halen and Styx early 1980's

Truthfully up until 1984, I could see where someone could lay the claim Styx was bigger
Paradise Theatre and Kilroy were huge albums and tours
I'm not one to go looking up stats of tours and albums because it always becomes a worthless pissing match. But Styx was mainstream early 80s, while VH was big, they didn't hit mainstream in my opinion until 1984
If I recall Styx had like 4 or five singles finishing the year in the top 100
But I'm also believer that charts don't mean a thing, and measure bands success is just stupid. Van Halen had a much bigger impact on music and was a better band

Styx was really popular in the Bay Area in the late 70s to around the time of Kilroy. Were they more popular than VH ? I`d say it was probably pretty even till 1984 came out then it was VH all the way

Them doing the little "play" on stage before actually, you know, PLAYING, I've never heard it or seen it, but they supposedly got boo'ed pretty routinely on that tour when they would do their little attempt at Shakespeare before playing any music.

That's like DLR's dance routine in 1984, it gets put into the "what the hell were you thinking?" box.

Yes it did and the band was never the same, but Mr Roboto was huge at the time, it was MTV, late night shows, Friday night Videos, it was big and played constantly

But that happens sometimes, infighting was happening for awhile over musical direction with difference of opinion between singer and guitarist and following the most successful year they break up

    Kind of sounds familiar

Styx had some good tunes, but damn I hate this song ...

The Behind The Music episode that featured them was a great one. Their description of touring behind that Kilroy album beats the disaster of Van Halen opening for Bon Jovi in the 90's.

Btw, it still hurts to type that.

Ugh. It's a Carpenter's song, not a song by a rock band. That song is saccharin overload.

I seem to remember reading something somewhere that Van Halen having to open for Bon Jovi was part of the growing rift between Ed and Sam. To be fair, it wasn't Sam's fault that Van Halen ignored much of the international market for almost their entire career.
