Default The Top Ten Scott Weiland Songs

Rolling Stone magazine just ran a Reader's Poll on Scott Weiland's best songs. Here's what they came up with:

    1. Plush
    2. Interstate Love Song
    3. Big Empty
    4. Still Remains
    5. Sour Girl
    6. Creep
    7. Fall To Pieces
    8. Vasoline
    9. Sex Type Thing
    10. And So I Know

I had already written an article on Weiland and came up with my own top ten before this list was published. It turns out I'm with other STP fans on the #1 song. The rest of mine is different, however.

You can check out my thoughts on Weiland and my own top ten HERE. I would love to hear what you guys come up with.

My favorite will always be Plush, yet I know he had several great tunes.
    He's already missed...

The guy must have been an absolute wreck. When people say you were a worse band mate than Axl Rose, you have issues.

I feel really bad for addicts like him, Layne Staley, etc.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

    Preferred pronouns: he/him/his

Hurricane Halen - Let's all gingery touch our sword tips!!!

Guess the hardcore fanbase was able to infiltrate RS enough to get And So I Know in there. These are the songs people heard on the radio, basically, except that one. Take out the VR song and rest are taken straight from their greatest hits album, Thank You.

I am probably one of the few people who is not a big fan of Sex Type Thing except back when the band used to close with a 7-8 minute version of it. I would put Wicked Garden or Slither on there if I were to choose one of the hits.

As I wrote in the STP thread, what I liked most about Scott (and STP) was diversity, so it is really difficult to put together a top 10 when there are many songs like Sex Type Thing and And So I Know that no one would ever think they were the same band if they didn't know.

Dead and Bloated is my absolute favorite STP song. I admit to not being a big fan of the band though.

Sliver is my favorite VR song. I loved the merging of the two decades to form the band, and I love what Scott brought to the band.

Cringed when I read suggestions to replace him with Sebastian Bach or some other retread from the 80's.

Nice to see that noise next door knows some STP.

Sadly, the first thing I thought of reading this Billboard article was a line from the song "Adhesive" off of Tiny Music...Songs From The Vatican Gift Shop:

"...Sell more records if I'm dead / Purple flowers once again / Hope it's sooner hope it's near / Corporate records' fiscal year..."

Scott Weiland's Bands See Sales & Streaming Gains After His Death
    12/15/2015 by Kevin Rutherford

Scott Weiland and Dean DeLeo performing with Stone Temple Pilots at Madison Square Garden in New York City on Nov. 25, 1996.

Stone Temple Pilots and Velvet Revolver rise on multiple Billboard charts after Weiland's death Dec. 3.

Following the death of Scott Weiland Dec. 3, multiple songs featuring his trademark vocals vault up Billboard's rock digital sales charts.

In fact, eight of the top 10 titles on the Hard Rock Digital Songs chart (dated Dec. 26) are by either Stone Temple Pilots (six) or Velvet Revolver (two), the two non-solo acts that Weiland fronted. The top-performing song, Stone Temple Pilots' "Plush," returns to top the chart, up by 1,405 percent to 18,000 downloads sold, according to Nielsen Music. (It sold 1,000 the week before.) STP's "Interstate Love Song" also re-enters at No. 2 (14,000, up 1,447 percent), followed by the band's "Creep" at No. 3 (9,000, up 1,192 percent). "Fall to Pieces," the top-selling track from Velvet Revolver, ranks at No. 4 (8,000, up 2,512 percent).

Also in the top tier: STP's "Vasoline," "Big Empty" and "Sex Type Thing" arrive at Nos. 6-8, respectively, with Velvet Revolver's "Slither" new at No. 9.

Fans are also remembering Weiland with album purchases. Stone Temple Pilots' 2003 greatest hits set Thank You re-enters the Billboard 200 at No. 47, up by 1,787 percent to 17,000 equivalent album units. It's the highest rank for the collection since it debuted at No. 26 on the chart dated Nov. 29, 2003. The group's 1993 debut Core also re-enters, at No. 145 (7,000, up 530 percent), marking its first appearance on the chart in slightly more than 20 years.

Streaming for Weiland tracks also surged, with "Plush" drawing 1.3 million U.S. clicks in the tracking week -- a 313 percent rise.

On the strength of their combined airplay, sales and streaming totals, three Stone Temple Pilots songs additionally bow on Hot Rock Songs (which launched in 2009): "Plush" (No. 7), "Interstate" (No. 9) and "Creep" (No. 12). (They're the band's best placements since "Between the Lines" spent seven weeks No. 1 beginning in April 2010.). As a result of their surges across multiple metrics, STP debut at No. 33 on the Billboard Artist 100.

Weiland, 48, died Dec. 3 in Minnesota while on tour with his band Scott Weiland and the Wildabouts. He was found in his tour bus bedroom. Official cause of death is forthcoming.

Can you believe the Spider-Man producers spurned All in the Suit That You Wear in favor of Hero by Chad Kroeger and Josey Scott?

I included Atlanta in the tribute video I threw together highlighting his diversity. It's a page or two back.

To be perfectly honest, I liked that "Hero" song from the first time I heard it.
I know Nickleback gets a lot of ribbing, but I'm a fan. To some extent.

I think the beginning of the end for Scott was his brother Michael's death in 2007. Scott had a great 2-yr sober streak during the No. 4 era (which is captured somewhat in this video), and the band was on top of their game. But painkillers for a knee problem derailed him and he eventually turned back to cocaine and heroin.

He was forced into rehab when VR started. Two weeks after he called Slash to tell him he wanted to get clean and go to rehab before starting with the band, Scott was arrested for cocaine and heroin possession. He asked Duff for help and Duff took him to Washington to do martial arts. The band waited a year to put him on the road. Velvet Revoler took a year before they toured, and it allowed Scott time to get clean and stay clean.

And he did. It worked. Then his brother died from an alleged overdose.

The fall at that point was fast. Less than a year after he died, Scott was arrested for a DUI. Early in 2008, he went to rehab again, but only a short stint, as VR had Australian tour dates to honor. By April 1, the whole thing was over. Less than 6 days later, STP reunited at the Houdini Mansion. Within a month, they were back on tour.

Scott never stopped drinking after that. I am sure drug use went in and out as he tried to stop, and even found in his tour bus was a pill taken to help heroin addicts.

There are rumors out there that some of Scott's friends are really unhappy and that while he let it happen to him, some "fame hungry coke-head" (read: Tommy Black) was willing to wheel his corpse out there every night and prop him up and ride it out. It is interesting that 10 days prior to his death, people who knew him were concerned. TMZ has sources that say 4 days.

I think some truth is going to come out about those last few days. But Scott had made two great attempts at sobriety that lasted a long time. But drug use never ended after his brother died. So he had a 7-yr downward spiral.

Anyway, Michael was 2nd AD to director Mark Racco, who did the Down video, which was based on footage from the show STP fans wish was released. Anyway, after Michael Weiland died of his overdose, Racco released this tribute to him in the form of a video for STP's performance of Dancing Days from that show.

"This short is dedicated to my friend and former 2nd AD Michael Weiland who died of a drug overdose in early 2007."
