Hard to fault the guy. It's a bummer for fans, but understandable.

Wait and see. He's saying that now, and it has to do with touring. He may still record with Rush.

Gene Hackman retired from acting a few years ago. Had no effect or relation at all to what Van Halen does... why would Neil Peart?

    For the sake of argument.

Man, talk about reaching with that thread title. That's like starting one that says, Sully Erna calls Nikki Sixx a fat has been, should Sammy lose weight? I just don't understand some people wanting this band to go away.

Anyway good for Neil. If that is what he wants to do I don't blame him. That man has been through a lot. If he has lost his passion for it so be it. Ride off into the sunset on a high note.

Neil Peart has paid his dues and had a long great career. Plus, his body simply cannot take touring anymore. It's not hard to see why he wants to call it quits. He's earned it. Much respect to him for a job well done.

Replacing Neil Peart with Gene Hackman?? No! The chemistry wouldn't be the same. Although he would look good in a hat:

You mentioned that he has a young family. Keep in mind he lost his first wife and daughter within a couple years time several years ago that prompted the long hiatus. It wouldn't surprise me that he missed a great deal of family time the first time around and may simply not want to forgo such experiences this time around.

As you also mentioned, he's feeling the effects of years upon years of drumming at the level he does night in night out. Especially given Rush back in the day and up until relatively recently toured for long stretches of time and without several years in between each tour. Drumming is simply far more brutal and physical than playing guitar, or keyboards, or practically any other instrument...

Well, if you're talking actors replacing Peart....

"Drum Forrest......Drum!" At least for the biopic.

Cast Tom Hanks alongside Jim Carrey for the upcoming comedy remake - Dumb & Drummer! Haha.

This is why I walked away from Red Rocks so impressed with Al. You watch the youtube videos and he looks like he's just going through the motions and isn't really "in to it."

Then you see and hear him live and my God does that guy bring it for a man in his 60s. Sure, he's definitely not "Animal" back there anymore, but you definitely notice more intensity when you are seeing him in person. And he hits hard! I'm an Ed head all the way, but I have to admit that Al impressed me the most on this latest tour.

I'm sure his doctor or whoever has told him he has to limit some of his movement back there with his history of neck problems, which is understandable, but other than that I see no reason that he can't keep playing performing because the adjustments he's made haven't affected the final product IMO.
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

While not as visually exciting as his younger days, Al has talked about the improvements in his technique and posture to compensate for his neck and back problems. He really does make it looks effortless back there, and he kicked some serious ass this summer. His stick control is still amazing and I can see him going on for quite a few more years. I liked his solo better on this tour than the last one as well.

There was a time in the 70's and 80's when you could see Mega Stars from the 50's and 60's at very small venues and maybe even get to meet them. Jerry Lee Lewis would be one example. I don't think this will ever be the case with Van Halen or Rush. It would be nice though.
