Default Hasbro Launches Robotic ‘Companion Pets’ For Seniors

This scares the shit outta me.

Hasbro Launches Robotic ‘Companion Pets’ That Give Seniors the ‘Gift of Comfort…and Joy’

    Nov. 18, 2015

Why should kids have all the fun?”

That’s what Hasbro’s new Joy for All toy line rhetorically asks.

This month the toy company launched its line of products specifically directed toward senior-aged adults.

“We believe that the power of play can bring joy to people at all stages of life, and we’ve heard from our friends, fans and consumers that some of our toys and games are especially appealing to seniors and enhance meaningful interactions with their loved ones,” the company’s Joy for All website stated.

In a statement about the new line, Ted Fischer, vice president of business development at Hasbro, elaborated that while many seniors might want a pet, they expressed being unable to care for them.

The first products in the line are “Companion Pets,” robotic cats available in three different fur colors. The cats, which are being sold for $99 each, have sensors to respond to motion and touch and can make “cat-like sounds and movements,” such as purring.

“While it’s not a replacement for a pet, the Joy for All Companion Pet Cat is a life-like alternative that can provide the joy and companionship of owning a real pet, without the often cumbersome responsibilities,” Fischer said.

“Whether it’s one-on-one time between caregivers and recipients, or multi-generational play with parents, children and grandchildren, we’re excited to enable families and friends of all ages to connect more deeply through the universal language of play,” Fischer added.

This holiday season, Hasbro is touting the Companion Pets to be a “gift of comfort, companionship and joy.” http://joyforall.hasbro.com/en-us

This is the wave of the future, unfortunately.

    Artificial Intelligence.

Everything we're accustomed to now, will be turned on its head.

We've been moving away from human interaction for years now. Phase 1 was the smartphone...

I guess it all depends how y8ou look at things. These can be very therapeutic for those with dementia.

studies have proven that people who have pets benefit medically from reduced stress.....lower blood pressure etc and that people who have pets at home are more likely to exit the hospital quickly to get back home

but seniors with medical problems such as asthma or COPD have trouble with pets..and people with mobility problems can find a pet underfoot dangerous.....so this sounds reasonable.

what's even better is human interaction especially with family, but sometimes family lives far away, or frankly just don't take the time.

My mil had a nursing home. Several of the ladies in there in various stages of dementia had "babies" they cared for. Just little children's dolls but on some level I suppose it gave them a sense of purpose. They weren't forced or even encouraged necessarily to have them but the ones that did seemed to do better overall.

I've seen dementia up close, sadly.

A robotic cat in a loved one's lap, would just make it even more depressing.

Not more depressing for them though. My grandmother had dementia, and my mom now does too. :'(

We gave my grandma a stuffed kitty after her cat died. She cared for him like he was real. Yes, it was hard to watch, but she was HAPPY, and when it comes down to it, that's what is important.

You just reminded me of something.

We bought a stuffed animal cat in the Hospital gift shop, when visiting my mom (towords the end),
and she clung to that thing.
I still remember her hands, her fingers kind of stroking the fake, white fur on the thing.

I remember thinking, it's like she is regressing to being a child again, in an odd way.

That whole final year, i just try and lock it out of my head.
I hate remembering her struck down like that.

I'm sorry for your loss. It's heartbreaking. My mom was the smartest, strongest woman I have ever known, and now I have to explain things to her as if explaining to a young child. Breaks my heart.
