    Default Desperately need help

Ok so after a year and a half I finally finished my first build. An explorer copy of a cheap Chinese kit. Anyway I plugged in and I have just the bridge pup hooked up to 1 volume knob and the toggle switch as a kill switch. The pup worked fine but the volume knob doesn't do anything. When I roll it there is only a mild change in volume. At 0 it's still pretty loud. And the toggle switch just makes the guitar feedback. No stoppage to get the Ace Frehley effect. Anyone got any advice for me??

    Thank you

Could you elaborate a bit on exactly how you have it wired? My first guess is a bad volume pot or bad solder points on the volume pot.

Could you post a picture of the solder points?

Thanks guys it may take me a day or two to get pics up. When I opened the back I remembered that I wrapped electrical tape around all the solder joints at the advice of a friend could this be the culprit and should I take the tape off anyway?

Thanks for the replies...put cs comng soon

I finished a build a few months ago, got it all wired up, and the volume knob did almost the exact same thing -- just sort of phased in and out of volume, never all the way up or down.

Turns out the pot was fried from reusing it a few times and heating it up too much from repeated soldering.

Solution, $15 for a new pot. These days, I just keep a spare 500k Gibson knob on-hand. Some of them just aren't any good right out of the package -- I've had that frustrating experience a few times as well.

Whooooooooooa, $15 for a single volume pot?

Here you go, you can buy the same exact low-friction EVH volume pots from Bourns for less than $4 on Mouser. They're just missing the EVH branding. Make sure to select the correct taper (audio) and value of 250k or 500k.

I have to go with the Gibson long-stem 500k knobs. The difference between $5 and $15 is negligible and I've found that good pot is is worth it.

Good potentiometers, I mean. You know what I mean.

I seem to be having problems posting the pics. I did use bourns pots. I think I am going to scrap and get a new switch and a new pot and rewire the whole thing, this was my 4th attempt at wiring it up and I think I may have burned the pot and the switch has some solder and wire residue on the ends that I couldn't get off. I'll try with new stuff.

Thanks again everyone for helping out I appreciate it
