    Default 5150 2X12 vs 1X12

    Hey guys,

I am considering getting a 5150 III combo amp as I sold my 50W head and 2X12 cab because it was too big and loud for my new apartment. Question...... what do you guys think the differences are (if any) between the 1X12 vs the 2X12 other than the extra speaker? Are there ANY benifits to having either or other than the size factor? Any differences in sound to anyones ears that have tried both combos? I am looking at the 1X12 because of the size as its a little smaller and seems to be the better choice.

    thoughts....?????

good to know.... remember though I need something that is apartment conducive so playing loud is no longer in my vocabulary thats why I sold the head and cab. Size also matters too so how much bigger is the 2X12? Noticable? Also fuddman, are you saying that the 2X12 sounds better? If so that definately is something to consider....

    thanks man

With both combos you get the power scaling feature. So between the power scaling and the regular channel volumes the 2x12 combo should get pretty quiet.

ok good to know. In your ears (anyone who has played both) does anyone notice a difference in sound between the two? If not I'd get the 1X12 due to minimal space....

ended up ordering one.... should be in next week on Friday.

one question.... is it a fair statement to say that the "power amp" setting should be at 1W or around there for low volume bedroom playing?

5150 and low volume in the same sentence just doesn't sound right LOL . In all seriousness I'd experiment with the wattage feature and master vol to see where the best low volume tone is , you never know it might sound best with the wattage half way up and the master down a bit. I wish the head that feature. The cool thing about the combo is you can always hook up an extension speaker cab if need be

will do I will do some experimenting when she arrives. Cant wait. My last 50W head and 2X12 cab was nice but I always wished I had the watage feature because playing at high volume with people around just never was conducive even when I was living in the house so I am kinda pumped to experiment with this to see where the best tones are.

as far as the extension speakers I was looking and the 1X12 cab is only like 369 dollars. Thats cool as I might have to get one of them at some point.

You can make it quieter than a church mouse if you want it. And then you can make it bark like a scolded dog if the need arises. It's very versatile.

just got my 5150 combo today. Ended up getting the 1X12 and I love it. Super amp and being able to hear the brown sound at lower volumes is great. I may end up getting a 1X12 cab down the road and mount the combo on the cab for looks and that would basically be the ultimate. Either way, I love the amp and she sounds oh so sweet....

anyone got any good Edward settings for the combos? Been playing with the settings but wondered what other folks used for VH settings.

See ^^^? That's what I'm saying.... Even the lethal 3rd channel gain doesn't have to be dimed!
Same with Pete Thorn's demo of the new EVH overdrive/distortion pedal. Gain knobs goes to 10 - that doesn't mean you have to! LOL.

Ed's settings are low 1:00, mids 10:00, and highs 1:00 or very close to that. Across all three channels. I went from all at noon then tried his settings. Pretty much kept them there except I cranked the lows. I miss the old 5150 over the top bass. Gain on blue I either am at 10:00 for classic rock and its my 1984 tone. Or I crank it. With my USA Stealth it's not enough gain. With my other guitars, EBMM Axis, Kramer 5150 replica with Tone Zone it's plenty of gain. Red I never go past 10:00. I probably could use less and have been meaning to mess around there a bit. Oh, I have the 5150 III 2x12 combo. Love that amp!

Honestly, the settings I use I got from the 5150ii owners manual and I've used it for almost 20 years. It says it's Eds signature setting. Doubt it. But it sounds good.

Yep the Red sounds awesome between 9 and 10 o'clock , I keep the gain on the Blue around 12 o'clock
