    Never heard this before...

Damn Al fuckin' rips it up!

I'd take a "Van Hagar" reunion if they'd play stuff like this, Summer Nights, 5150, etc.

Sammy sounds bad. Here is the set list according to http://www.setlist.fm/setlist/van-ha...-7bd7fe20.html

That's a good set list but whatever. It was 1988 dude, they only had two albums.

DLR fans don't like anyone but DLR let's be real. Set list has nothing to do with anything and is a total cop out. Sammy could have done 25 Dave tunes and some fans still would hate him.

Nice version. Rare to hear, and thanks for posting!
Brett's right though - the Sam haters will always have a bone to pick with him, regardless of the music, his hair, his wardrobe, his personality, etc.

Here's the obligatory "I WAS THERE" post!

This was the 2nd Monsters Show... hotter than hell... I remember between Dokken and Scorpions (I think) there was a sod fight. 30,000 drunk lawn people hurling chunks of grass in a free-for-all. My buddy got clobbered by one, but whatever. I didn't much care for "Source", but the show was a great time.. even though Sammy split open his tailbone the night before and was moving around slower.

It's good to hear this again. I have a bootleg CD, but this tune was cut... and probably by me. I was trying to wedge everything onto one CD back when blanks were a couple of bucks each.

    That was dumb.
Sings like a bird. Rocks like a pig.

Yeah, the vocals are rough in spots, but I'll give him a pass like I give Dave a pass as its a live performance and this is not a soundboard recording (I don't think).

I'm one of the grumblers about the lack of Dave material through the Sam years, but that's what they decided to do so whatever. I think it was a mistake to ignore 6 albums of history, why that decision was made I'll never know. Interestingly they're doing that now too. I'm assuming the reason mostly has to do with Dave and his lack of range to sing the material, and I'm sure Dave wouldn't sing the stuff anyway, but it's a shame because there's some good stuff that's being ignored, just like there was good stuff being ignored with Sam. I guess we need to bring back Gary.

Here's a setlist (in no particular order) that I'd be happy to pay for with Sam on the mic:

    Poundcake
    Judgement Day
    Summer Nights
    Aftershock
    Best of Both Worlds
    5150
    Dreams
    Black and Blue
    Runaround
    The Dream is Over
    Source of Infection
    Don't Tell Me
    Humans Being
    Good Enough
    Amsterdam
    Mine All Mine
    Top of the World
    When It's Love
    Feelin'
The only genre I really know is Van Halen.

I almost posted one of your shows here as well. Mainly to point out that I feel bad for kids these days and the utter garbage that they have to choose from for a concert experience. When we're talking about the fucking Foo Fighters being the saving grace of guitar driven rock, you know that things are bad...

I'm glad I at least got to catch the tail end of the Sam era.

Completely agree in regards to the Foo Fighters.
I do not get it at all.

I saw this tour (Monsters of rock).

My show, they opened with AFU, then went into Summer Nights.
I don't recall hearing "Source," though i may have just blocked it from my memory.

I remember Dokken was a mess.
Lynch fucked up the intro to "Standing in the shadows," they stopped, then Pilson
    showed George the intro.
I saw it fairly close, it was weird.

Later, George flubbed a big solo in another tune.

Definitely an off night for Lynch.

I was 16...Loved 5150, loved OU812....but geez, by not playing the DLR songs it really irked me. I always thought it was Ed's idea. It was a bad one. I would have probably always preferred Dave even if Sammy did sing them, but it just pissed me off that my favorite band ignored the best music in the history of music. Playing You Really Got Me and Rock n Roll were also twisting the knife.
3 Sammy songs and 3 Classic VH songs... (I don't count YRGM). Slap in the face. I was young, I never heard Ed play that old stuff live. I wanted to see him play it.
    Right here I say....

I think Sam sounds great, not sure what some are hearing, but I think Sam sounds awesome and Mike is in tune and not overpowering the song, I think it's great, and that has to be a BITCH of a song to sing live.
Taylor Swift is nice to look at. Adele can sing.

Emperor Brett - "I can't believe you guys are analyzing song-by-song Van Halen III? What next, analyzing the script of Stroker Ace looking for some shred of Citizen Kane?"

David Lee Roth did the impossible. He made Van Halen better. Deal with it!

Tough audience if everyone thinks Sam sounded bad on there. I'll criticize the quality of the recording itself but not the performance of any of the band on that tune.

As far as the set list, I get why DLR fans were left unsatisfied but as a huge fan in 1988, I will rate each song as follows:

    Summer Nights -AWESOME!
    A.F.U. (Naturally Wired) -AWESOME!
    Black and Blue-AWESOME!
    Panama-AWESOME!
    Bass Solo-AWESOME!
    Runnin' With the Devil-AWESOME!
    Why Can't This Be Love-AWESOME!
    Mine All Mine-AWESOME!
    Drum Solo-AWESOME!
    You Really Got Me-AWESOME!
    Sucker in a 3 Piece-AWESOME!
    When It's Love-AWESOME!
    Eagles Fly-AWESOME!
    I Can't Drive 55-AWESOME!
    Best of Both Worlds-AWESOME!
    Guitar Solo-AWESOME!
    Source of Infection-AWESOME!
    Only One Way to Rock-AWESOME!
    Ain't Talkin' 'Bout Love-AWESOME!
    Cabo Wabo-AWESOME!
    Rock and Roll-AWESOME!

That "Congregation" song is pretty fucking grating on the nerves!!! The local station plays it 20 times a day. I don't hate the Foo's, but despise that song!
I know what you mean though. When people are claiming the Nirvana & the Foo Fighters are some sort of rock saviors or special entity? Barf...

Sammy sounded fine on there, as did the rest of the band. I didn't hear any 'Kermit the Frog' whatsoever...
