    Default Edward uses Groove Tubes?

Most guitarists know Groove Tubes are just relabeled tubes from various manufacturers. Here's a link to pics from Ed's 2012 rig. Notice the Main Stage Amp is running Groove Tube power tubes. There is a sticker that reads "JJ 12ax7" on the head. This surprises me. Aren't Groove Tubes a crap shoot? One would think he would want a certain manufacturer.

    Check out these pics.

I have 30 or more 12ax7 Groove Tubes--- they all suck in V1 of any amp I have ever owned

My experience is that grooves are hot tubes. I had some in my block 5150 and it was really hot.

I would guess he's simply road testing the new stealth head, or whatever it's called, and trying out different tube combinations to see what works live and what doesn't. He's been road testing EVH gear the past few tours hasn't he?

I found basic cheap 13mm Chinese Ruby tubes to be really hot with not much depth to em. The GT 13mm 12ax7s always seemed dull and less dynamic. I don't know if GT, Ruby, and JJ are all made in the same factory but the JJs always seem to get it on real good. I haven't bought any 12ax7s in a few year. So my info is dated somewhat

Ok, now that makes sense. I saw the sticker where the amp took JJ preamp tubes. I also found out that one can figure out who made the Groove Tube by a code on the tube. So that explains it right there. So Ed must like JJs, huh? Interesting.

This actually makes sense. Now that you mention it I bought a fender blues junior and it had groove tubes which I thought was odd for a blues amp.

The Groove Tubes that come in the newer 100s heads are relabeled Winged Cs.
