    Default Appreciation for Alex

You know I really don't see big al getting any props from anyone. Which is kinda dumb because to me his drums are as recognizable as John Bonhams.

His timing, rhythm, plus I admire anyone who can kick a double bass like he does.

After reading sammys book I don't think his style changed that much once he got off the sauce. Other than dropping the Simmons it seemed to me that he played the same.

I'm listening to when it's love at present and even on a song such as this he's just a monster. Never understood why people acclaim Stewart Copland or Neil Peart over him. Hes up there with moon and Bonham to me.

    But obviously I'm biased.

There have been threads giving Alex props in the past. They never last long.

Being behind the drum kit makes him the most low key of anyone in the band, past or present. Aside from saying he's a monster behind the kit, guess not much more to say about him.

He's simply the best, and the reason I started playing as a kid. The man has an instantly recognizable sound and style all his own, and he can play anything. I also don't think he gets enough credit for all the amazing and unique custom kits he has played over the years.

I agree with Al's own assessment of his facial expressions in live performance - "I look like a fish!" Haha.
There's a part in the Summer Nights solo, from LWAN, where he does the 'trout lips' pout. Always gave me a chuckle.

Just wait... Someone's going to mention how he played the keys on Respect the Wind!

I'd love to see something like this done for Alex. I think it would really show the diversity and strength of his drummer. And his swagger.

Alex is definitely one of the best. Never overplaying. Just adds the right amount to a song.

I am not a drummer so I can't add any technical inputs regarding Al's playing. But damn, I was very impressed with his energy and tenacity on ADKOT, especially on As Is and Chinatown. Hopefully there's more songs where those two came from.

He was on fire on ADKOT. Before the album was released, I was hoping we'd get one blazing epic double bass freight train with Al conducting, I had no idea we'd actually get TWO along with a bunch of other high energy scorchers!

I love how in the 1981 live hear about it later from Oakland you can see him close to the very end using the double bass and his feet are fucking on fire. Just amazing. I can play double bass like say ginger baker but al is in his own league.

Al's double bass is so underrated. I also love the double bass Al does during the guitar solo on the live version of HAIL.

Fudd, I tried to "like" and quote your post about HAIL, but for some reason it wouldn't let me!

I also love the way Al has added the double kicks to EWS during the solo live. Terrific.
