    Default '70s Pro-shot Video

His '78 San Fran vid has been up for a little while now but I just noticed the '77 one is available on YouTube now. Black and white, but pro-shot '70s Sammy nonetheless!:

Been to a trillion Sammy shows, but still have yet to see a song from his '70s solo era outside of "Red," which incidentally is only song I truly love from that era (and I know all the songs). I'd say out of all of the VH derivatives--including Gary's side bands--that '70s Sammy solo is my least favorite. Actually...make that '74-'75 Montrose with "Paper Money." Anyways, pro-shot from his pre-Geffen days is still unreal to see!

I recently saw this as well. I have to agree that when taken as a whole, the Capitol years represent his weakest song writing. I find many of the songs tedious. I do like some songs though like Plain Jane, Rock and Roll Weekend, Planets on Fire, Love or Money. I also like the quality of Sam’s voice as it’s very different from how he sounds on the Geffen records onward.

I think if you look it up Sam signed one of the worst contracts ever when he actually signed to capital records. He was required to release 2 records a year. Think about that, he was the primary (only) song writer and he had to write, record (vocals and guitars), promote and tour for each of the records. he never had a chance to stock pile material. A lot of the material is pedestrian and I'm not making an excuse, it's just what it was. Once he signed with Geffen his stuff improved a lot because he finally had a chance to breath and actually work up some material. His stuff was still better live.

I've actually always preferred pre-Geffen Hagar solo for a whatever reason. I like the more nuts and bolts stripped down rock approach of some of those songs and records. Also being a younger guy (31) I'm always curious as to what Sam's popularity was like back then. I know he was slightly obscure but he was on some big shows and tours. For anyone that saw him back then what was that like?

I saw him open for Boston in the summer of 76 or 77 in a sold out Maple Leaf Gardens in Toronto... He was incredible... His sound was very HEAVY and LOUD at that stage, and he had amazing energy live... I remember him leaping off the drum riser...

I need to do some RESEARCH and try to figure out what set list he would have performed that night... I knew nothing about him prior to that show

    Boston was also incredible...

Sam was a "regional" guy from what I understand. He could be huge in Detroit (he was very popular here even before he joined VH) but virtually unknown in another area.

    it's strange.

he did a few live records for Capital, and he has great energy, puts on a great show. the songs are better in that setting.

    Could it have been 1978?

I have seen Sammy do "Red" quite a few times locally here in NORCAL.

He played "Love or Money" at a few shows I went to in Lake Tahoe a few years back.

I have also seen him do "Rock and Roll Weekend" in Tahoe and in the Bay Area.

Love or Money is a good tune, one of the best ones he did back in the capitol days IMHO. Neal Schon played the solo on that (maybe he played on the whole track I'm not sure).

Yeah since '97 he's done some other Capitol oldies but it's rare and usually at Cabo or Tahoe. I know he did some on the '05 Los Tres Gusanos mini-tour and even broke out "Turn Up the Music" and "You Make Me Crazy" in I think '08 at some one-off shows.

My faves from that era in no order would be:

    Red
    RNRW
    TUTM
    Trans Am
    C&B
    Urban Guerilla
    Keep on Rockin'
    Silver Lights
    All American
    Love Has Found Me
    Straight to the Top
    Don't Stop Me Now
    Fillmore Shuffle
    Plain Jane
    Love Or Money
    Hip Kid
    20th Century
    Call My Name

when he walked away from Capitol for Geffen he basically gave up any rights he had to any of the songs he recorded for them....that's why whenever Sam releases anything officially you get some type of new "greatest hits" or "classics remastered" stuff from the capitol years. there are a ton of compilations out there from that time, it's usually the same songs too...it's really strange and from what I understand Sam receives no compensation from that stuff what so ever (but I could be mistaken about that).

I just saw this last week on youtube. I've got the '78 winterland show on dvd, with eddie money and Neal Schon, which is superior. one of my fave shows to watch now and again.
Now I've gotta get this '77 show in dvd form.
It would be awesome if Sammy could get a hold of these shows, scrub 'em up and make a box set, etc. That would be killer.
What is understood need not be discussed

"Dont disturb my paradise. I've asked you once. I've asked you nice" - "SERIOUS JU JU"

"I am in a blissful state. Dont bug me!!!" - Richard Dreyfuss "The Goodbye girl" 1977
