    Default ESPN shuts down GRANTLAND

    http://espnmediazone.com/us/espn-sta...ing-grantland/

    http://awfulannouncing.com/2015/espn...grantland.html

Writing may have been on the wall with all the the editors and writers leaving over the past few weeks. Obviously with no Bill Simmons, this had a chance of happening.

A few pretty good NFL, NBA and MLB Writers there.

Jonah Keri and Ben Lindberg were very good MLB writers.

I didn't really get much into the pop culture stuff, but I know many others liked it.

They were getting some insane web traffic. One of the bigger long form essay style sports sites on the web.

there statement really says it all.

"Effective immediately we are suspending the publication of Grantland. After careful consideration, we have decided to direct our time and energy going forward to projects that we believe will have a broader and more significant impact across our enterprise.

Grantland distinguished itself with quality writing, smart ideas, original thinking
and fun. We are grateful to those who made it so. Bill Simmons was passionately committed to the site and proved to be an outstanding editor with a real eye for talent. Thanks to all the other writers, editors and staff who worked very hard to create content with an identifiable sensibility and consistent intelligence and quality. We also extend our thanks to Chris Connelly who stepped in to help us maintain the site these past five months as he returns to his prior role.

Despite this change, the legacy of smart long-form sports story-telling and innovative short form video content will continue, finding a home on many of our other ESPN platforms."
clearly quality writing, smart ideas and original thinking is only something that they're too interested in.

I am guessing this is part of their cost-cutting strategy. According to CNN, some writers will be retained, others won't be.

Recently, they have let some big names go, and before this they had just laid off 300 people. Far from just 'trimming the fat,' former employee Charlie Steiner said, "Not just fat. Not just muscle, but down to the bone." Why? ESPN is facing falling subscribership just as some huge contracts are going into effect.

Over the summer, Disney CEO alluded to some forthcoming changes. "[T]he business model may face some challenges over the next few years," he said about ESPN.

So what is going on? Not long ago, ESPN was the most expensive channel on cable, charging providers $5 per subscriber, with a guarantee that they would be in 90% of subscribers homes. (By comparison, AMC, with the number one cable television show, charges less than $1 per subscriber. This is more indicative of pricing; ESPN charges a lot.)

When new contracts came up, ESPN asked for more than $6.50 per subscriber. To get it, they agreed to a reduced 80% household penetration threshold. So cable companies started offering more packages without ESPN. This became a double whammy. Not only are a significant amount of people cutting the cord and relying on things like Hulu, Netflix, and HBONow, but some customers began choosing cable packages without ESPN. In fact, earlier this year, ESPN sued Verizon over a new package they offered that did not include ESPN (http://www.usatoday.com/story/tech/2...ndle/26455305/).

ESPN has lost 8 million subscribers since 2011. As subscribership and therefore income is trending down, outlays are trending way, way up. Last year, ESPN gave the NFL a 73% raise to $1.9 billion. Starting next year, ESPN gives the NBA a 143% raise to $1.4 billion (and experts say no one else was within $500 million in their offers). Last year, they gave MLB a 136% raise to $700 million. For college football playoffs, starting last year for last January's games, ESPN gave a 391% raise to $608 million. They also gave various college conferences raises from 55-113%, and MLS an 838% riase. There's also another billion and a half or so in various other agreements that went into effect since 2013.

One longtime executive told Sports Business Daily, "The cost of goods is going up and sales are going down. That’s not a good trend." I'd expect more big changes at ESPN.

Really? Grantland is trending higher then #happyhalloween today on twitter. Huge sports world news. http://trends24.in/ http://trendsmap.com/

There was a link on the ESPN.com front page for 4 years. It was the biggest web site that had branched off from espn.com

    www.grantland.com

    +++++

Some good MLB, NFL and NBA writers. They would go deeper into the stats or plays then your typical beat writer.

They also did some of the most popular podcasts in sports. Bill Simmons went from there to his own HBO show coming up. Jalen Rose and Jacoby went from a podcast to now doing the afternoon spot on ESPN Radio.

The other half of the website was pop culture, film and music stuff. I didn't really get into that. But it was very popular.

My understanding was that when they let Bill Simmons go they wouldn't let him take Grantland with him. Now a few months later they shut it down. Stupid.

I rarely read it, but the stuff I did read was interesting.
CNN may think my opinion matters, but you shouldn't.
